Hi,

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer 4x4 and I have "burned out the engine" and need to replace.

I have located an engine from a 1999 Explorer with 70,000 miles on it at a good price ($900).

Will the 1999 engine work in my 1998 vehicle.

Please let me know your thoughts.

That would depend on a couple of variables. If you are swapping a 4.0 SOHC for another, or a 5.0 for another 5.0 you shouldn't have a problem. The wiring harnesses should be the same, but I think you might need the 99 PCM. There may be slight differences in the program coding between the 2 yrs but I'm not 100% sure. The engines themselves are the same respectively between the years.(meaning the 4.0 is the same and the 5.0 is the same.) Hope that helps or answers your questions.
