My 92 explorer has its far share of miles on it and ive been thinking of getting a new motor for it. ive heard from a couple guys say that a 302 will bolt rite up to the stock tranny thats in it. is this true or is there alot of screwing around that u have to do to get it to fall into place.

No, that definitely won't work. Even if you could, the tranny would last for maybe 100 miles.

If you want a 302 then you want one with the transmission attached.

But why are you wanting to replace the motor? It is very common for the 4.0 your truck has to go 350k+ miles.

he probably wants more power then the wimpy old OHV. If you have a manual then get a 5.0 and tranny from a stang. If u want auto get it from an X. Either way ull need engine tranny rear end computer and all sorts of other things.

Unless you're trying to race someone, the OHV has plenty of power IMO when it's running well. I don't feel like my explorer is underpowered at all, and that's also with automatic and 3.27 gears. I give it the gas and it will go.

i dunno man i mean 155 hp 220 ft lbs of torque 3.27 gears or 220 hp 295 ft lbs of torque and 3.73 gears..... kinda oddly balanced lol plus the 5.0s last a very long time as well. ive got 240000 and never done any engine or tranny work. Thats another thing good about em is the 4r70w tranny lol

The difference between the two engines is also this...

The OHV is installed, the 5.0L will have to be installed with a custom wiring harness you'll have to make, and also have to swap in another transmission. Depending on how you do it can range from 500-5000 bucks. Easy.

The 4.0L have lasted just as long as the 5.0L, if not longer. The only major problem with the first generations are their automatic transmission, those are the weak links in the system. There's also the 65+ wobble, but that can be fixed (or so I've read on here)

The 4.0 is a great motor. With much potential.

The 5.0 only has an extra liter on it. Call it 30% more power.

But the A4LD defines the words light duty.

You won't have to do a whole lot of wiring for the swap. Especially if you go carbed.

The rear end is fine for all but full on drag.

i had a really good feeling that a 302 wouldnt fit! it just didnt seem rite to me. The 4.0 thats in it is still running stong it just has a TON of miles on it. other than that is still a great motor. i picked the whole truck up for a thousand bucks but had to replace the head gaskets a one of the heads. but i got a smokin deal on all of that. this was two yrs ago this month. when this motor goes i will just get another 4.0 and drop that in.
