i been playing around with the idea that if i ever found a salvage 4x4 explorer, that i might want to convert my 2wd ST with it. well i found a 1993 explorer V6 automatic 4X4 that a guy is selling in my area for 450. he says the engines blown, but the drivetrain is good. i have another truck so it wouldnt matter if my STwas on blocks for a while, and i have an uncle and a buddy who are both mechanics who would help me with the conversion, so my question is if this 93 explorer 4x4 drivetrain can be taken out and thrown onto my 03 ST XLT. im assuming that there would be a few things here and there that i would have to still scavenge for and things i would have to fab and things like that, but for the most part, could i take the tranny, transfercase, front axle, drive shaft and computer from the 93 explorer and throw it into my 03 ST? no a big thing that im desparate to do, but i think it would be a cool project if i ever came across the opportunity. any help and knowledge would be appreciated.

The 93 uses TTB for the front suspension. Totally different design than 1995 and up. It would be just as easy to do a SAS on your Sport Track.

Also it is not legal to put an older model engine in a newer vehicle. It's not a state law it's a Federal law. Seeing has you are in California there is no chance in hell you will pass inspection.

Is that really a federal law? So putting say a 90's 5.0 into a 00's explorer is illegal? Or the 2.3 turbo ftom a turbocoupe into a newer ranger is illegal? I never heard of that.

I really have no idea, I was just asking. I've read on the forum of doing stuff like this, nothing I was taking super seriously, I was just wondering if it was possible because I think that would be pretty cool. if the stars lined up and I had an opportunity to do it I think it would be fun.

thanks for the info dan, thats good knowledge. i wasn't thinking about swapping motors, just slapping the 4WD into my ST, but your points are well taken. not something im really itching to do, but it seems like something that would be a cool project that you could learn a ton from if you ever got all the right parts lined up. im by no means a mechanic or even know a fraction of what a lot of guys on the forum know, but i remember helping my uncle and my dad drop a motor into a 65 fastback stang and another motor into an old toyota pick up and that was some fun ****.

I think what dan means is that it is definetly doable, but you would probably want to do a SAS instead of the TTB. The TTB is a obsolete design and way to bulky of a front axle. If you are going to put some money into a 4x4 swap you might as well resarch a better axle setup than the TTB. I do understand why you would want to do the swap considering you have the parts cheap and axcessable. If it is somthing you would want to do than do some research and maybe it will not work with the TTB but could work in the future for a SAS if the parts were stumbled apon or a good deal came your way. Good Luck.
