My O/D off light started flashing and the Check Engine Soon light came on last week while driving down the highway. The 1-2 shift is a bit slow and it looks like maybe its not going in to Overdrive at all. I did reset computer by disconnecting the battery, and also reset the lights (turned them off) with my Actron scan tool.

The lights have stayed off, but the transmission is still slow on the 1-2 shift and haven't thought to check whether it feels/looks like it is going into overdrive or not.

I'm not convinced that a replacement servo module or the servo bore O-ring fix will fix it since many threads I have read state either fix (or both together) won't necessarily fix it.

So, wondering if I can continue to drive it,....lifting my foot to help it shift to 2nd, or will it eventually self destruct if I continue driving it??

That's what happened with my old grand marquis (same transmission) and I left it alone. Eventually I couldn't get it to 3rd at all and traded it in.

Try to fix it. It's worth the couple hundred bucks.

any idea how many miles you drove it before it was unable to select 3rd gear?

I wish I knew. The odometer was frozen at 83,000 for YEARS. Helped with the trade in value though. I lied through my teeth to get them to believe it though lol. I can say that when it started to get where you are now, it wasn't long....

Not the same trans. The Marq had a 4R70W, which is the exact same as a 96-01 V8 Explorer. The 02+ have a POS 5R55E (or some other last letter, they all suck). They have tons of problems from the factory due to poor design and materials (rated the worst car on carcomplaints). It is just a matter of time once they have an issue until they die. Either the valve body has issues or an internal band will break forcing a rebuild.

If ford used 4r70W on 02+ ex they would have had many happy customers. Problem is they needed a 5 speed for fuel mileage CAFE requirements, and the 5R trans is probably cheaper.

Did you ever have the Marq diagnosed? It could be something simple like a range sensor. They are very good units and I have one that is well over 200K with fluid changes. There are 1 million mile units from that product - especially the delivery vans.

I have driven mine until the O/D light goes off permanently. Since I have it under warranty before, I have them inspected it and they recommended to replace it with a reman. I believe it was around 75k when it happened but the symptoms (of not O/D going off) since 50k I guess. Wife drives it daily so doesn't really care if trans is acting up weird.

Here's a video of that issue (not in my case)
