Winch urban legend or WARNING you decide

A good friend of mine was reading on an EB board that vandals in Autralia have been sabotaging rigs with winches. What they do is take the cable out and put it over the roof and attach it to the rear bumper. Then the turn it on!! The cable tightens and creases the whole car right down the middle. Breaking glass and quite easily totaling the truck.
I don't know if it's true or not but it sounds reasonable. Especially with all the SUV bashing here.
So lock your cable and/or put a switch in the cab to disable your winch. It could save you a ton!

Is a winch capable of that?

I think 8-9000lbs. capacity should be plenty of power. It's only sheet metal and glass.

Damn !!! There have always been tree huggers against SUV's but over the past few weeks i have read an unusual amount of SUV bashing threads. I hope that it doesnt get to the point where we have to keep guard of our explorers to make sure nothing happens to them.
Seems like we are at war with our own country.

What do you think would happen if rolls were reversed? What do you think would happen if we were at war with Japan or China or whatever country makes those annoying ass civics. Do you think that the same people that are bashing us would be willing to sell their imported vehicles and buy american?
