OK, here's the question. Been reading the Harwood manual and the Ford manual for just the fuel injection stuff. It looks like HArwood used a lot of info from this manual. ( which is fine ).

The engine harness from a 93 Mustang ( It connects all the injectors plus Oil send unit, Water temp unit, and 2 other sensors ) has 2 large round connectors that should hook into the Main Harness ( the one that hooks upto the computer ). The problem is that my Explorer Harness does not have the correct "Round Connectors " on the Main Harness. I can get the round connectors from the Donar 93 Mustang Harness and splice them in to my Explorer Harness.

Is this similar to what others who have done this conversion did?

Still reading manuals to get this wiring thing straight.

Thanks Rob

Well, I thought the wiring things ya gotta splice are on the drivers side fender well....those connectors went from the side of the motor, to that wire mass in frnt of the driver on the fire wall....That is where all the crap for the oil pressure light...I think...then there is another page with crap about crossing wires for the computer. That's where I threw in the towel. It gets towed in friday, and they start on it monday morning....So next week, I should know more. Sorry I couldn't have been of more assistance

Gofast,

1) R u using the Mustang engine/computer harness?
2) U need to remove all of the 4.0L engine/computer harness from the existing vehicle harness. (Note: Ford use to have the engine/computer harness separate from the vehicle harness. I am not sure when, I think around '89, Ford went to a integral harness, combined the engine/computer with the vehicle harness; what a mess.)
3) After removing the engine/computer harnesses, put a battery in place and verify the lighting still works and find three wires: a) a pwr when running wire, 2) a pwr when starting and running wire, 3) a constant pwr wire. Mark them!
4) After removing the X harnesses bundle up the remaining wires and neatly secure them in place and out of the way.
5) Put the Mustang harnesses in place and attach the pwr wires per the Ford Manual (Pamphlet # unk.).
6) Take your time and do it right the first time.

I will try to remember to get the Ford p/n for the manual tonight when I get home, if you need it.

Good Luck, you are going to need it.

More wiring...

Sandy, I have the complete 93 mustang main harness and the 93 mustanf engine harness.

I have the X Main harness, but none of the engine harness from the 4.0

I have the motor inplace and the 93 M engine harness installed. All the sensors connected etc.

I was planning on using the Mustang Main Harness but it did not have the connectors to tie into the main fuse box that runs all the fuel pump stuff and ABS stuff etc.

I have the Ford pamplet on the Fuel injection stuff, the $ 5.00 booklet.

I may pull the X HArness and compare it directly with the mustange harness. Just not sure how to overcome the fuse box issues.

I'll try to get pictures this weekend of what it looks like.

Thanks Rob

It is really a nightmare, you will have to remove the X's computer harness and rewire anything that does not work. Try to remove only the wiring for the computer, I think the fuel pump is in there somewhere also.
It will be very time consuming but worth it in the end.

I wish I could help you more but I am in Massachusetts and do not have long enough arms.

Good Luck,
Keep asking around.

Oh ya, the Mustang computer harness connect to the two ten pin round connectors next to the EGR valve mounting location on the Intake, the 4.0 harness will not connect to them. You will need to use the all of the Mustang harness and the computer.

Rob,

Sounds like you are trying to go about all this wrong. You can cut off your plugs and splice them into the other but it's going to look like a hack job. The best way to do this is to build the harness. When I did my 4.0L conversion in my Bro II, I used all the factory Bro II plugs on the 4.0L harness. There are no splices, everything was repined. It looks completely factory.

If you like, I can do the wiring for you and save you some grief. Email me if you interested.

I am playing a bit of catch up to the rest of you. My X died a few weeks ago.

I also plan on the 5.0 swap. I will be working with a mechanic who does a lot of engine swaps. I was just admiring a TBird 2.3 Turbo he stuffed into an MG - very nice.

After looking at my wire harness (92 X) and several manuals I decided to buy the Harwood maual which is quite helpful.

When Using the Ford Motor Sport (FMS) wire harness you need to use both the main and engine harness and remove the same from the explorer. As mentioned by Sandy.

You will not be keeping your 4.0 engine harness, main harness or computer. Don't even attempt it. The mustang main harness should go through the firewall and mount the mustang computer the same way the X harness worked.

The wires you need to "integrate" into the existing system is to supply power to the 5.0 harness and connect your instuments. The majority of this is accomplished between the two connectors that should be vacant at the moment on the engine harness (On the 93 mustang harness I looked at there was a round and a rectangular connector that were behind the throttle body on the stang. They are each 8 pin connectors.)

You will NOT have these connectors. I would suggest you go to the junk yard and get the mates for the two connectors (females I believe).

You will be connecting from pins on these connectors to your main wire connector block that passes through the fire wall ( I believe it is connector C147 on the X wire diagrams). As an alternative you could trace the proper wires out of the fire wall connector back to the next connector block in the circut and stub in there (this will take a lot of wire tracing).

Sandy's suggestion to put a battery back in to test for the auxillary circuts and most important find those power sources. According to Harwood you only need to find 12Volt source for 1) Crank only and 2) Crank & Run. I agree with Sandy - find a run only power source while you are at it (Harwood's manual is not as clear as it should be about this).

I traced my rear ABS and fuel pump wires and I can't find anything that coonnects them into the main wire harness. I still have to trace the fuel pump cut off wire.

I talked with a person at Ford Motorsport who put a blown 351 in his early explorer (He said if he had it to do over he would go with the 5.0, not the 351). He confirmed that there are only about a dozen connections to be made. Everything else stands on its own. He also stated that he needed to modify the oil pan further when using the Superlift 6" lift kit. This may just be true for the 351.

I will have to look at the earlier posts, but briefly could you tell me what you used for the following:

Whose motor mounts:

Whose Headers:

Engine model/year:

Front Accessory brackets you used:

What accessories did you re-use:

Right now I am debating if I want to use an Explorer V8 as a doner, Or have an engine built.

I plan on using the transmission from a full size Bronco / F-150 (Yes another Mazda - model M5R2. A little stronger than our M5R1). I have had T5's before and they have problems as well, especially with the shifter. The third party shifters help, but the inside mechanism that switches the shift rails is not well designed.

Guy Groves,I will have to look at the earlier posts, but briefly could you tell me what you used for the following:

Q) Whose motor mounts; Headers
A) I used a kit from L&L Products. This kit comes with, motor mounts and headers, lifetime warranty to original owner on both. The headers have a 0.50" flange very strong and the pipe is made from very heavy walled tubing. The motor mounts are straight forward and rugged. Also included in the kit is the correct oil pan modified for the Ford suspension arms and lift brackets; oil filter relocation kit; the two main pieces of the oil filter kit are sweet, best pieces of aluminum machining I have seen, (I am a Quality Assurance Engineer and have on occasion looked at a few pieces of aluminum machining).

Q) Engine model/year:
A) '92 Stang, reasonable low-end torque and good mid-range HP. The engine has performed great for the last six years.

Q) Front Accessory brackets you used:
A) L&L has the short accessory package but I have not used it YET.

Q) What accessories did you re-use?
A) None

Also, you will need a new radiator that fits under/in the front support. I have a friend, yes only one, that used the stock X radiator on his Bronco II/5.0L swap and it worked out well with an electric fan.

Q) Right now I am debating if I want to use an Explorer V8 as a donor, or have an engine built.
A) I have always thought that if you got the engine/trans/transfer case from an F-150 everything would go in and work great; I never tried it but my thoughts are along that line.

You seem on the right track with the manuals and tracing out of the wiring, keep track of what you have done and let the forum know when/where/how...

Keep it on all four.
