I just installed my Alpine CDA 7998 that features a motorized face that hides itself when the car is turned off. It seems everything is wired correctly however the unit usually wont hide itself. Its supposed to hide itself 30 sec after the power is turned off. It does this occasionally but usually just stays out like if you had unhooked the battery.

I think it has something to do with how the explorer leaves interior accessories on after the car is off until you open the door. The unit comes on when the car is on and it will stay on when you turn the car off then if you open the door the unit turns off then it seems like it doesn’t have any power to hide itself.

Did the original radio not have a constant 12v wire? Is everything switched in this car? Maybe I have a bad connection to the constant power wire. If this is true would the unit even work at all? Right now I'm limited to manually hiding it each time I exit the car or parking in safe neighborhoods which isn't terrible, but this is bugging me.

I found the answer! Apparently there was a TSB for the Alpine CDA 7998 that stated when the head units remote wire is connected to a relay the relay can cause some sort of interference in the wire and it will cause the unit not to hide itself after the car is turned off. Apparently the TSB which can no longer be seen on Alpines website says that a diode in the circut can remedy the problem.

Maybe this can help someone else out there in internet land. I found the answer on some Vette forum.

I will install a diode in my line this weekend and see.
