won't start warm

1994 explorer xlt
1994 XLT 4.0 V6. When I park my explorer after running it up to normal operating temperature it gives me trouble starting for the next 5 minutes to 60 minutes. When it does start I must keep the accelorator to the floor until it cleans itself out. This usually takes about 10 seconds. Sometimes it does not even start. It runs very rough and some black smoke and rotten vapors come from the exhaust for this short time. It does run flawless otherwise. I have changed the fuel pump and regulator. Also I checked the fuel pressure it seems to maintain about 40psi while running. Any help?

Have you checked to see if the fuel system will maintain pressure when the engine is off? It almost sounds like one or two leaking injectors causeing flooding.

To be honest with you I'm not sure but I think it is pretty close to the system pressure. Hard starting, having to keep the pedal on the floor, running rough when it does start, black smoke and a rotten smell are all symptoms of flooding. If we were dealing with a carbureted engine it would be a lot easier to blame it on flooding or vapor lock. Since the explorer engine is injected it kind of makes it look like a fuel injector is leaking or is still being triggered by something to open and close. Then again it could be a million other electrical gizmos that arent working but it still looks like too much fuel is getting in the engine somehow.

FIXED

I just wanted to let you know that I got the problem fixed. There is a temperature sensor that tells the computer if the engine is hot or cold. It was bad therefore causing the computer to send extra gas for a cold start and flooding it. I hope this helps
