So here's the thing, started out about a year ago, bought a 96X, had 154k on it. It had a slight hesitation when shifting from park to drive. Wasnt that big of a deal, ran like a dream otherwise. Now, within the last year....a bit different, starting last summer, she just dies. Pull the plugs n wires, (which i found were originals), replaced, crisis averted. Was quite impressed, 185K miles on original plugs n wires, not too bad by my standards. Well, now it starts getting bad.

Battery dies on me, replaced, alternator dies on me, (at a college campus, so i at least had some eye candy to bide the time) replaced. Transmission, transmission, transmission, transmission. Starts slipping from 2-3, slams into gear, upshifting and downshifting. Fails to engage for 5-10 seconds, or "fully" engage. Will move "under-powered", until it catches, then its fine. 3rd gear, RPM's jump irratically, but strangly, the acceleration doesnt???? Have changed filter, and flushed fluid. No change.

To this point, its still my every day, drive to work vehicle. Until this weekend. She died on me again. Thinking, i just replaced my plugs and wires, batter and alternator, (which it cranked, just didnt wanna fire), recent experience tells me crank shaft position sensor or coil pack. Changed em both, low and behold, still.....no fire.

So, now ive moved onto the fuel system. Seems when i spray some starting fluid into the intake, it seems to "want" to run. No humming from the gas tank, relay ticking, must be the fuel pump. YEEEEEEAH!

I havnt quite started on it yet, but im really, really, really, looking for a reason to NOT drop the gas tank. If anyone has any other, easier, and cheaper ideas to try first it would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, and the transmisison too. Thanks

cut an access panel over the tank to get to the pump easier, ??

hmmmm.... well, at this point, an extra hole wouldnt hurt much, lol

it could be sealed after and could be used again, just use sheet metal screws to hold the panel in,, there is a thread on it,,

jump the wires to see if it will run..... of course, a meter will likely tell if the pump is good or bad.

get a hammer ,thats right a hammer .now go out and hammer on the gas tank a bit
try not to create sparks).then go see if it starts.if it does you need a new fuel pump.
we brought my kids car home near 10 miles doing that very hammer trick.once home he replaced the pump.
sometimes there is just some dirt in the wheels of the pump .the hammer can dislodge them and bring it back into service .but i would still replace it in the long run .

good luck.

My Ranger died the other day... decided it was easier to pull the box rather than drop the tank... either way, a wire had broken off the fuel pump. Put a new end on it and away we go!

It is way easier to cut a hole in the back of your Ex, than to drop the tank. Dropping the tank isn't all that hard either, but it's a PITA.

Reality is, you've got a 14 year old vehicle with a lot of miles on it. Stuffs gonna fail often.

You're tranny is probably shot. Looked for a good used one or get it rebuilt. At some point, it's gonna leave you sitting on the side of the road not moving at all. Those trannys are not know for their longevity.

Check the fuel pump inertia switch located on the interior passenger side firewall.
