mishawaka, in
hi. First off i would like to let u know about me. I am an ASE certified technician, but no certification with transmissions, and currently not working in a shop, so i dont have access to alldata or mitchell on demand (that im so used to having!). Anyways, i do have knowledge with auto's, and i have spent days searching this message board but i am stumped. I have a customer (as i am doing work on the side till i can get into a shop) with a 1991 ranger 4x4 3.0 v6 with an automatic. It has 311,000 miles (YES! 3 hundred thousand!). The husband changed the filter and filter some time back because reverse isn't working and didn't solve it. So im looking at it. Heres what its doing. It only goes forward when put in overdrive. It accelerates smoothly, no slipping. Put it in reverse, drive, 2nd or 1st it acts like its in gear as in it acts like your power braking it(keeping your foot on the brake and gasing it), and when u rev it up to about 2 grand it will try to move, like its in gear, but not. Same thing with all gears mentioned but "overdrive", where the trans works just fine.
I checked for codes and no codes at all, KOEO or KOER. Any transmission experts out there im looking for advice. I have been a member of multiple message boards from various cars ive owned in the past so im no stranger to these places. any help would be appreciated.

Ummm. Wow. Maybe no one that has looked at it knew the answer. And with that attitude I'm guessing you won't get much of one either.

Oh yeah. Welcome to EF.

Welcome to this forum! We try to help as many people as possible. Don't get frustrated so easily. It's very hard to answer every question that comes up. The site has a search feature that will give you numerous results. Did you check the sticky threads on the top of this section? We have 3 sticky threads on the A4LD (valve body, full rebuild, and project frankentranny).

Thank you Mr.mnstrmech, ASE certified technician, for the compliments and please visit again ........ and don't sell that Chevy.

I'm a trans newbie, and far from an ACSE certified mech....but it sounds like only the forward clutch might be working correctly, would be one possibility...if you click on the link in Brooklyn Bays signature that says useful threads, and look around some...there is a link to schematics that has a band, clutch, etc. application chart for A4LD, looking at it it looks like basically in OD 1 the forward clutch is applied and OD sprag, Low sprag locked, in OD 2 OD sprag locked, Forward Clutch applied, and Low Sprag overrunning, in OD 3 & 4 the OD sprag is locked and OR respectively, Forward Clutch and High Clutch are applied, and in OD 4 OD band is applied... now if you had OD 3 & 4 it might indicate that the High clutch was working.... but in D 1 2 3 it shows that all the above clutches are applied (with the exception of D 2 where band is not applied, and Low sprag is OR ), but the coast clutch is also appliedin all 3 Drive gears, which is not used in OD.... so it would seem logical that if the coast clutch were damaged, or not being applied for some reason, you might have OD, but not D?
..that's just a total guess on my part.... You can prob narrow your diagnosis by doing pressure test (check stickys for Glaciers thread on this, and also by applying air to the appropriate places in case to listen for the thunk as clutches are applied, and apply air to release passage to release this can verify clutches operation.... I think all these are logical things to help narrow your problem down...but I only recently started studying the A4LD to solve some issues of my own, and these are just guesses based on the tutorials, rebuild diaries, reference information, etc. that I have found through reading this forum....

Would it be nice to get an answer to every question posted?...sure!... but let's face it, people have lives outside of this forum...and I am just thankful that they have ever bothered to contribute the time that they already have, and continue to do a lot.....there is so much good info here that with thorough preparation, some common sense, and a lot of luck.... people can do diagnosis and repairs that would cost a bundle otherwise!

I saw a bumper sticker I liked once...

"I'd rather push a Ford than drive a Chevy..." ;-)

Respects,
Ragga

WOW.. really? some tech you are. With that many miles the trans obviously needs a hard and soft part rebuild. You must be one of those ASE certified paper certified techs, without any shop time
