What size wrench is the nut at the bottom end of the EGR tube supposed to be? 1-1/8" sort of fits and by using two different open end wrenches and flipping them over I can very slowly get it unscrewed.

I've been trying to find a 1-1/8" crowfoot wrench without any luck unless I want to buy online.

Is this nut metric? If so, what mm size is it?

Everything that I can recall on my '98 Explorer is metric, so probably that too. I did some searching for 26mm Explorer EGR, 27mm, and 28mm with the majority info being that it's 27mm.

If memory serves it's 1-1/16" (=27mm), a common size.

I agree with the 27mm. A couple of days ago I used my 27mm crows foot wrench to tighten up the connection to the exhaust manifold and my "EGR tube tick" has gone away.

I bought mine through Amazon.

1-1/16" is too small. 1-1/8" is a bit loose. I'll see about getting something in 27mm, even if I have to buy a wrench, saw the end off and weld a socket to it. Nobody around here stocks any crowfoot wrenches that large, especially not in Metric.

I took an old cheep Taiwan wrench and cut the box end off then ground the open end till it fit , I use a pipe on it as a cheater to break them loose then I have the short handle so I can get more turn ,

IDK, I used a large adjustable wrench and gave it a few taps with a hammer. It surprised me in that it came loose pretty easily. I reinstalled it with some anti-seize. It's probably metric though.

^ Well sure, there isn't much that won't come loose with a suitably sized hammer.:hammer:

Looking real hard at the cut off end of a 27mm wrench and weld an old socket to it approach. Should be able to buy a wrench cheaper than what a 27mm crowfoot will cost online. No store around here can even order something like that. :P
