1st please forgive me as I know this topic has many many posts. Including projectPonys post right below mine but I did not want to be a post hi-jacker.

I have previously replaced a broken blend door on a 98' EX but this question is different.

I am considering purchasing an 03 XLT. It has problem where heat is always on even when you move the temp control all the way to cold. My 98' did this because of the blend door, but on my 98 when you put on max ac the flow of coolant to heater core got shut off so you could at least get cool air by using max AC.

In this 03 the heat continues to come out even when the MAX AC button is pushed. Does the coolant flow not get turned off in this 3rd gen EX? I don't know if this EX has manual or auto climate controls. perhaps push button for max ac is clue there?

Seller says a buddy told him problem was "relay" buried in dash, I think it could be blend door except for the difference from my 98'.

they should be the same, there's a heater control valve under the hood which is vacuum operated. When you press the AC MAX it will close the valve (preventing coolant flow to the heater core) via vacuum (you could see the arm moving the valve when it does this) If you don't see this valve moving check for the vacuum hose it could be hanging or has a leak. If things are working under the hood then it could be the blend doors under the dash, some of them make a noise when you adjust the temp. If you have an automatic climate control you can do a self check on the unit.. http://www.idmsvcs.com/2vmod/eatcswap/selftest.html
