WTF,

Dude at local off-road shop tells me he can put 4.11s in my ex for good price, but all my research indicated I would get 4.10s.
NO ONE Mentioned 4.11s!
Is this guy stoned or what? I talked to him on the phone today and said I liked his price, but 4.11s ? hmmm. wouldn`t matter .01 difference anyhow.

I don`t wanna start questioning him on it without more knowledge guys, but if he doesn`t know his gears then I`m hesitant... Help!

Oh,... 93 ex 4 door 4.0 manual tran. stock 3.27s!

Same thing. You will be fine.

4.10s or 4.11 it doesnt really matter. Basically they are the same. but different axles used different gears sets... Example (to make a point, not real ratios) a Dana 35 uses 4.10s........ while a GM 12 bolt uses 4.11s...

Yup, in general, Ford axles have 4.10 gear sets while GM axles have 4.11 gears. Most parts guys just think 4.1x :p

Hmmm....

It's not quite the same thing and it does matter (at least to me it would).

Not the .01 difference in ratio, but the fact that here is a guy that you are about to pay your hard-earned money to do gear work on your Explorer - that's no minor job - and he doesn't even know what gear ratio goes in it. I've learned time and time again that "4x4 shop experts" know Jeeps, not Explorers, but will talk to you like they know what they are doing, when they've never in their life cracked open an Explorer unit.

If I hired someone to regear my vehicle I would get a person who at the very minimum at least knew what goes in the dang thing.

Well thanks people!

Just can`t wait to try my baby with those gears, and I`m getting a detroit locker for the rear as well. got 2" susp lift and getting 31 inch tires next week. Expensive, but when I go out with my buddy and his jeep crowd I wanna kick some butt! Maybe even pull them outta the tough stuff for a change....

Thanks again..

Oh I see gerald has replied and got me worried again,
I`ll query him on the gears again before trusting him. just to be sure.

Just be sure he orders the correct gears for the front end. Gears from a STANDARD ROTATION DANA 35 will work.

4.10 must just be a Ford thing. I have Jefe's old stock set of 4.10 gears out of his front end. Ford calls them 4.10's, BUT if you count the teeth and do the math the real number is 4.111111111~ or 4.11. I'm sure the guy is ordering the gears from a company who uses the actual number, not the rounded number Ford uses. You have nothing to worry about.

On Randy's Ring and Pinion they have them listed as 4.11's.

But then again, we have seen Randy's isn't cracked up to what we thought it was.

Yes, the dana 35 takes a 4.11 while the Ford 8.8 takes a 4.10 . . .It is, for all practical purposes, the same ratio.

Furthermore, I wouldn't be worrying over the fact that the guy didn't know which was which. (afterall, as I said they are practically the same ratio) If you're taking your Ex to get regeared there you better have already done your homework to know that this guy does decent work, for a competetive price (and not a great price for a questionable job).

okay!

I`m hearing good stuff about this guy anyway. I`m gunna use him. He did seem to be quick with my answers even though the gear naming seemed off. Thanks people..

Clarification

Like we all agree, the .01 or not doesn't really make any difference. What sent up a red flag to me was that he was using GM terminology and would install it "for [a] good price".

I have met so many 4x4 shop "experts" who confidently gave me advice and talked authoritatively about what can be done with my Explorer etc that really didn't have a clue what they were talking about. They knew Jeeps and assumed that made them experts but they were totally clueless about my vehicle.

My warning, upon noticing the GM terminology and "good deal", was meant for Jim to make very sure that this guy really was a good gearman. You don't want someone installing your gears, adjusting backlash, etc who didn't know what they were doing.

Jim it sounds like you checked up on him a little. Enjoy your new gears and let us know how it worked out!

I hope you meant NOT.

He has a 93. Which is a reverse rotation D35. If he ordered standard rotation D35 gears (aka Jeep D35 gears) they won't even fit in the housing because the pinion won't line up.

Once again, order REVERSE ROTATION gears for the D35.

Crap I was thinking second gen for some reason.

My apologies.

Isn't the 2nd generation reverse rotation also?

Happy trails!!

Nope 2nd gen is standard rotation.

Okay, thanks for clarifing for me!

Happy trails!!

Following up here!

Got my 31" BFG A/T K/O tires on and man they look nice!
:p
-They sure come close to the front fender, don`t they?

Went to the gear shop today and was happy to see lots of pics with Ex`s in them and saw him workin` on getting a newer Ford rear end with disc brakes onto a 91 Ex. I`m sold!

Bummer is he won`t be able to do the work until after next weekend, so I`m in wait and suffer mode right now!

Will post and let everyone know how happy I am with this configuration when it`s done. I want to get my pics together and put them on the before and after section too, from stock on, (but of course we won`t notice it has new gears and a locker, ha ha) - Or maybe some of you Ex freaks will be able to tell some how.
