I'm thinking they could have disconnected it if the rear was re-geared something different than the front. Maybe they did that instead of removing the front driveshaft? Just a thought.

so if they did, will i not have 4x4 either????

You would. But if you have a 4.56 rear end with a 3.73 front end... and you engage the two. BANG. That would be one reason why they would disconnect the push-button.

Another reason could be they were trying to diagnose the 'my explorer will not shift into 4wd' that 95% of Explorer owners go through. :D It's usually the shift motor. Try cleaning all the contacts. Or use a BFH. :D

thanks for the heads up. i'll go disconect it now and work on it in the future...at least i'm hoping it's an easy fix so i can have it ready for pismo :D

i do need to find out why it don't lite up and how to change the bulbs...i'll start looking for the my X won't go into 4x4 threads...thanks again

wait a minute....if they did swap the rear then i could not ever use 4x4...do i need to go to a gear shop and open it up and get new gears first????

i wouldn't know what i was looking at, lmao...is there a shop around or should i just run a couple blocks over to currie???

froader: what size axle's are on the 91' X's ???? i just looked up currie ent website and the go by size and not vehicle.... i'm thinking i could afford to match the front...cheaper than a sas for now, hmmm ...:feedback:

thanks froader...i just talked to the off road race shop by my shop and they said they would help me with their discount from currie and my mechanic around the corner swaps gears pretty regular for nascar type truck series and he said he would check mine out while i'm working next week....i just have to have blinders on when i go to currie cause they have dana 44's just ready to go home with ya, lol....

ok, well i went to currie today...i wish i had a wad of cash...i did see a detroit locker i liked, lol...

then i decided since i was in the X i would take it over to my alignment shop since the truck is pulling to the right...they recognized me and as i went to fill out the paperwork my alignment guy tells me he can't do my X...i told him he previously told me that lifted trucks were no problem...he said i was correct...anything lifted is ok for them but since the exploders are known rollover vehicles the only way they would touch them is if they were bone stock and then they would have resolutions...

ok, so i went to my mechanic next to me and he pulled out his alignment measuring dodad and he and i put a quick fix on it...now i need to do bushings in the rack...good shimmy at 40 so i'll be shopping parts...so i decided we could work on my a/c and we had to change an o ring, no problem...we trued to fill the a/c with freon and he had a damages nipple on the can tool so that didn't get done today...
i'm already needing a break from my X and i think i will work on the t/c motor this week by myself...it's been a long day....

Gear problem is easy.

Jack up one rear tire.
Put mark on pinion flange and and housing next to each other. (Think like how you mark two pieces of wood that you plan on biscut jointing)
Then put a mark on the bottom of the tire jacked up.
Rotate the tire two revolutions and count how many times the driveshaft rotates. if it rotates 3.5 times you have 3.55 gears, 3 3/4 rotations is 3.73 gears. 4 1/2 rotations is 4.56 gears.

Lock the hubs on the front end and do the same thing.

This works if you have open diffs. If the are locked you have to jack up both tires and then rotate the tire one turn.

If the count is the same front and rear you have matching gears and can use 4wd. If it is different then you need to get your gear issue resolved before you can use 4wd.

thanks rock, i am going to do that the same time i work on the t/c motor....i'm hoping tomorrow afternoon....

Just go manual with the TC motor.

hey rock, let me run this by you...we use to do this method when i raced and it's a little foggy but something didn't jive and i think i remember what it is...it's both mark the pinion and the wheel....but when i turned the wheel 2 times i only got 2 1/4 on the pinion...but if you rotate the tire and count the pinion rotations till you land on both the tire mark and wheel mark at the same time then you have completed one cycle of the gear and hence i have 4.56 with 35's...sound right on the mechanics????

dang, btw, i don't have a locker on the rear :( i'm on to checking the front and i hope it matches...

oops got it... i should have paid more attention in math, lmao...2 1/4 was one spin of the tire, duh...i double checked both front and rear and good save guys...i got 4.56 in the rear and stock 3.73 in the front...i guess i should have to wait and swap the front gears in first to start working on the t/c... i will be posting a wanted add for 4.56's....thanks and forgive me for thinking, lol....

well, i went to 4wheelparts today and returned a steering shock that came with my shocks for my ranger...i used my mechanics discount there to see what 4.56 gears and the install kit would be...not to bad so i will be purchasing that next week...while i was there i had to by something with my store credit so i picked up a 3"x30' recovery strap and a slide in clevis....i still need to get some hooks at least for the front but i have spent enough lately so those can wait...i never thought about needing to eat next week, lol...
