Since doing a post on the Livewire I also felt compelled to do a post on the X3. The X3 is a unit which is similar as the ExCal2 but with more memory. The X3 still uses the same tuning as the X2 so this is only a hardware change. The X3 holds 3 custom tunefiles and also has preloaded files for common applications. Pass thru datalogging, read-diagnose-clear trouble codes. Retail pricing is same as the ExCal2 $389.00+shipping. I currently have several Explorer customers using the X3 successfully. Justin146 is well known customer of mine which uses the X3.

I have touched on a search for laptops, $400 will buy a decent brand new Acer model. I'm not ready yet, but I'm trying to get caught up. Soon,

I hear ya, I am not familiar with Acer. I personally use a Dell. Everything was upgraded on the inside.

Acer is a good reliable company that makes a lot of good products for fairly cheap. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Edit: I so want one, saving the pennies!!

How common is it for the A/F ratios to be off significantly to begin with? That tuning with Allie's truck sounds odd with the air cleaner, do you think that that may be similar for other trucks? That's where likely you find tuning to gain 20+hp, when the OEM tuning is that far off.

Where should I purchase one of these sct tuners??? Also where should I go to get custom tunes???

Thanks Sean

When I put my wideband on my bone stock 5.0, idle was really lean, and my WOT was rich.

Also, if you are looking for a laptop to datalog with, I experimented with the software on my $50 Ebay special Dell P3 600 and it worked just as good as my high dollar Thinkpad.

Thanks Justin, I suspect that every vehicle made could benefit greatly from better PCM tuning. The ;laptops I browsed through were on eBay. With 19,000 to choose from, I narrowed the first search to new laptops under $600, and that still left over 500 I believe.

Also (most importantly), the X3 PowerFlash has an actual back up stock tune on board. While this makes it take a little longer to flash (uploading the factory data), it is a nice safety device.

The X3 is also self resetting. If you set your vehicle back to stock, the VIN Lock is reset AUTOMATICALLY and the X3 can be immediately used on a different vehicle using the pre-programmed tunes. So, if you have 2 or 3 "supported" vehicles in the driveway and want to "test" a tune on each, the X3 (and LiveWire) will let you tray all 3 out and then you can stick with the vehicle you want. There are 5 vehicle swaps you can make before the device needs to be reset by SCT.

Allies truck was real excessive, I have never seen this before. Normally the trucks are leaned a bit by aftermarket mods. People really underestimate the importance of tuning. For example, removing the air silencer and installing a panel filter on my wifes car leaned it out 8%. Doesn't sound like a lot but here's the math. a/f of 13.8 add 8% fuel at wot= 12.7 afr (almost perfect for a n/a car). This looks alot more intimidating with the a/f's posted.-j

FYI, my PCM code was a CDE4, I had a picture somewhere but it was easier to pop the hood today. I found out yesterday that one of my spindles was bent, which explains a lot of my inner tire wear. They set it again at about -1 degree of camber, which is quite a bit for these trucks on the street. I may end up having to swap the spindles again if I think the new tires wear that way again.
Hopefully in a couple of weeks I can be asking about tuning this, and another flasher, wideband. Regards,

Cheap Laptop

Best Buy will have a Toshiba laptop for $229 on Friday after Tday. They had a misprint and it looked like I was going to be able to pick it up yesterday. NOPE. Anyway, it is an Intel Celeron, 512 meg, Vista Home :(, 15.4 screen. Not sure if it will support XP. What a price though! Maybe the SCT software will run on Vista. I never tried.

I am happy with my SCT II that I use on my 2006 Mustang GT and I use a Dell Laptop with it.

I have the X3 with custom tunes written by Troyer Performance. I use it on my Ford F150. I like it. Mike Troyer writes great tunes. I may even have him tune my '97 Mountaineer.

That means you can hook it up to a computer with OBD2 software and display readings on the computer screen right?
yes-
this is with an xcal 2
and your old laptop:D
there is literally a crapload of parameters to pick from.

Don, I got this super fine Dell 610 for 250 bux.

Oh-
I have to add this
The stuff all looks intimidating at first, but the LiveLink software included has a real good tutorial. I was determined to learn this with no questions posed to James.
I was able to pull that graph in about 25 minutes from opening the box.

Good for you, A.J. has the neat toys. If I could get an answer from a cam/head expert, I would have a head/compression, shortblock chosen. I'll have a balancer soon enough, and I can get to tuning my 99 PCM with the flashers etc.

No-I got mine from Briwayjones.
over a year ago-these are good little units.

The "other" deal might fall through. I guess the touch pad died-:(

Sorry for the hijack James-but if Don gets a laptop he will be getting these toys also, I'd imagine.

Cool, I'm going to be installing a carputer into my Sport. I was going to get some kind of data logger so I could have readings on the screen like a Scanguage. I was also planning on getting a XCal2 or 3 with some tunes in the future too. So it looks like I will only have to get a XCal and kill two birds with one stone.
