I swear 5 gear is slipping but o/d holds fine(don't see how this is possible)...its very hesitant to go to fifth especially o/d off. When I turn o/d on it quickly goes 5,5o/d
Scanner app says fourth when rpms indicate fifth??
Was 1300 rpm@50 revved to 2550 stayed there until I was doing 70.....same rpm maybe a few less...... Then it drops o/d and holds fine wtf...was just rebuilt last Jan 15 k ago.....

Don't forget there is converter lockup to consider when diagnosing your o/d. If it was rebuilt a year ago I would take it back to the rebuilder and see what they say. (your fluid level is ok isn't it?)

Just for clarity

5th gear is "overdrive". The last shift you are feeling is the torque converter locking.

The fluid was checked a month ago by rebuilder though I do see it on pan...

Maybe four or five times now I've heard a somewhat loud ping (metal to metal) somewhere in the front maybe trans but sounds farther up like r@p popping....

We got in a argument because he told me I needed a "special tool" to check flui, I said I know its a god Damn torx......he said well I couldn't get it out and put a new one in it..(assuming pan was dropped)though its now covered in red I don't see a drip anywhere...

I know I was towing a 6x10 trailer but i felt a good shake (dismissed as trailer)

I'm about to load it with firewood and haul it home in 4 I guess....
Converter locks fine though doesn't want to stay locked.....

FOR THE RECORD THIS WOULD BE MY 4TH CONVERTER @111K WTF!!

I'M using the torque app for info...(gear trans temp etc)
http://www.appbrain.com/app/torque-pro-(obd2-car)/org.prowl.torque

My warranty went last month but guy will still cover me especially since I took it in a month ago and he wouldn't address it instead said its xcase(put in a new one...)
It's trans like I told him.... Ugh something in trans is frying converter......

you do know, when trailering you are supposed to use the o/d off switch ??

When they changed the converter all those times was the shaft of the converter scored real bad?

While cruising at highway speed can you notice the overdrive cut in and out, over and over again untill it gives up and just stays unlocked?

Any abnormal vibration?

Does the trans ever smell hot when you get out of your truck after a drive?

If so, I believe your tranny is about to go BANG! from a cracked sunshell and worn torrington bearing causing problems.

Yeah I was but 70 @3800 n 4th rpms is too many...plus the trailer was empty wouldn't go to 5 no o/d unless o/d is on then it almost skips that shift to lock converter

Prior to yesterday every time I tow or just turn off o/d it'd still go to 5 no o/d but now it will notcome out of 4 with it off....

Never saw it apart.. ford put one in at 33k for a driveline vibration then @77 then full rebuild at 97
Occasionly I smell a burnt smell but can't confirm its my truck..
O/d holds fine with very steady pedal, I do have oversized tires...
I monitor trans temp and they never go over 180
I felt a good vibration Otw here though the trailer I'm towing always shook. Vibration went away at halfway point when I dropped the trailer...

My trans guy has worked with my grandpa for years and is highly recommended..(pa has 4 buisnesses,15 cars)
He will be eating the cost unless he wants a lawsuit..
He is who agreed with dealer it needed just a converter at 77 then warranted it for 9k (check trans/o/d off flashing) (ford trans guy said o/d was slipping bad like higher rpm in o/d than without...) at 15 went again.... and he still agrees it should never go that fast...
Not sure if its related but I hear a whistle in first and second(my 11 e150 whistles in 1)

Here is what was put in it last Jan...

Anyone see anything missed or skipped that should ask about?

I know the trans takes mercon V why does it say atf +4???????

Ok so I made it home..tree hour drive half of which with a 6'/10' trailer w/2' sides half loaded with firewood (transferred tool boxes also) and oddly enough it drove about the same with the trailer(not as bad as anticipated)obviously there was some load but didn't affect it much..

Btw I got about 10 mpg which is definitely down from usual even hauling.

I climbed under her with a flashlight and everything looks fine except for an unusual amount of fluid coming out pinion seal(I'm regearing in spring it was planned for then)and seemed to have a greenish almost antifreeze green in it with little to no viscosity... Tomorrow I will check fluid in it.

God forbid, dare I even suspect that there could be a problem there that's fooling me into thinking trans feels weak(definitely requires more engine load than usual)
I'm standing by it now listening to an occasional ping like metal cooling I've been hearing since I parked.. sounds like that could be where its coming from. Idk maybe I'm over analyzing..
Any input would be great, thanks guys,
Will

did you shut the overdrive off with the trailer on ?

did you shut the overdrive off with the trailer on ?

Yes off all trip couldn't do the hills with it on....
I had torque app running and recorded the output in a video....will upload shortly..

Shows load gear trans temp fuel % rpm etc

What are your average/max trans temps?

160@60mph for most of the trip then when I got on interstate it went down to 147-152..
I would imagine that's pretty ideal especially with trailer..this trip seemed no different than since I've started monitoring.
I rarely see 175+ never over 183 and just like you that was for a split second cresting afton(not today)
I will post a YouTube video of what its doing as soon as this phone uploads it
Forgive the shake I am driving after all...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sJNNV9DXPk&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Go ahead and save yourself and fast forward to 2:30...ask if I need to post what is what gauge wise...

That seems like a good temp range. I was driving up a 10 mile long uphill grade in W.VA back in Dec and hit 220 for about 2 mins  don't know what else I could have done about it other than change the fluid after the trip, though that might be overkill.

This is a small grade I used to almost make it up in o/d but not now...
I wonder about that shift in the video

hmm...not sure either.

That's most of what its been doing;changing rpms with no indicated gear change (maybe a intermediate servo? Idk)
minus the gradual rpm increase;slipping
I'll do one tmrw of the slipping during acceleration in 5gear

I told the wife(she goes with flow) I have half a mind to convert the Damn thing to a stick and be done with it...especially if it keeps up......
