Bear with me first time in chat board.I was coming home and my check engine light came on my 94 xlt explorer. I pulled over and looked under it and transmission fluid was pouring out. I never had any problems before except if i drove a long way 300 miles or more trip i could smell something burning or like something was getting hot. I had it checked out before they found nothing wrong before all this happened. Service station said tranny seal was bad so we put it on car trailer and brought it home. We got the tranny out and sent it to tranny specialist and he replaced bushings filter and seal and told me he thought something else caused my tranny seal to go out. We flushed the tranny lines put tranny back in and I drove and it won't shift into overdrive. It is an automatic. The engine was hot too and I only drove a couple of blocks. We are draining radiator and flushing it and I also bought a new thermostat. Does anyone have any suggestions or has this happened to you. thank you

Are you sure you plugged in the electrical connector into the transmission during installation? Is it seated fully? This transmission has electronic overdrive, so without that connector being plugged in you won't have OD.

If you do a search of this site for trans seal, or A4LD seal you should have plenty of information and reading.

Basically when replacing the front seal they should check the crank hub runout and bushing bore, the converter pilot, and the seal mounting surface. I would also ask if they checked the pump alignment and bellhousing bushing. All of these areas can create seal problems later.

The no OD could be electric- the plug into the trans or the wiring in the trans case itself may not have been reconnected.

If the engine is getting hot it may be prohibited from OD by the computer. Fix the overheating and go from there. The overheating problem may have contributed to the fluid boil.

I am sure he did but will double check to make sure. There is still alot of heat coming off the motor so we are going to drain and flush radiator and change thermostat. my gauge has never read that it's hot either. Thank you

Thanks SteveVB. I will be doing a search for information. This is first time asking others for help. I am a ebay junkie thats what I usually do when I am on the computer.

I think one commonly missed problem with the A4LD is the fact that the bellhousing itself can warp out the bushing and cause repeated failure and leakage.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The transmission guy did check all of the things you guys mentioned and we flushed the radiator and refilled it and put in a new thermostat. We even checked to make sure inside gauges were okay.Engine does not get hot and no check engine lights are coming on but the Lockup converter is not working. the overdrive is now but not the lockup converter. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

Check to make sure the Vehicle Speed Sensor is working correctly, and is plugged in. If it's broken, or not hooked up, the computer won't lock up the converter.

If that's not it, it's an electrical/sensor computer issue. The torque converter is computer controlled on these Trannys. I'd check all the tranny sensors to make sure they are working properly.

Thank you Brad will go with your suggestions and check them out tommorrow.

There is also the possibility that the computer is telling the TCC to engage, but, because of a broken wire, bad connection, bad solenoid, dirty valve body, or ??? the transmission can't respond to the command. If the sensors check out ok, then you may want to hook it up to a scanner or put a voltmeter on the TCC solenoid circuit and see whether or not the computer is telling the TCC to lockup.

Engine sensors - TPS, ECT

If its not throwing any codes, and after checking both the 3-4 solenoid and the Converter solenoid for correct function.
Could be a few things:
Check the TPS, the Engine coolant sensor(different from the gauge sender sensor), MAP sensor, vacuum lines - general, specifically to the MAP, also could be the brake switch(should throw a code though)

Slight chance of EEC problem (i would doubt it)

After those cleaning trhe valve body and the TCC valve specifically, or if its been rebuilt its possible they put in too strong of a spring

Barring all those - the converter needs to be replaced.

All info from the ATSG manuals for the A4LD.

Good Luck
