U HAUL AGAINST EXPLORERS!!!!

I saw a BII pulling a u-suck trailer on my way home yesterday. The plates on the trailer were from Ontario, and the BII had Colorado tags. Further proof that while it may be U-Haul's right to deny rentals to certain vehicle models, they still aren't making any sense.

This is the email I wrote to uhaul.:
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer an If I want to pull a trailor I get a ball hook it up and haul, I have never felt uncertain about rolling over and hauling a traylor actually makes me feel more attached to the ground. The reason I am sending this email is on recent accounts of hearing that uhaul does not allow explorers of any year to haul there trailors I dont care what the media has said about the explorer in fact consumerreports.com rates crash test rattings good or better.

Dear Matt,

Thank you for your request for information on our policy regarding Ford
Explorers.

U-Haul has chosen not to rent behind this tow vehicle based on our history
of excessive costs in defending lawsuits involving Ford Explorer towing
combinations. This is an unusual circumstance and we do not like having
to make this decision. We do not like saying “no” to our customers and we
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. This policy is not
related to safety issues.

U-Haul can offer several ways to move. We suggest using a different tow
vehicle or renting a truck and/or an alternate towing combination to
facilitate your move. For rates or more information, please visit us on
line at www.uhaul.com, click on truck & trailer or contact our National
Sales and Reservations Team at 1-800-468-4285.

Ford isn't going to help you. Their customer sevice sucks, and ends as soon as the vehicle is off of the showroom floor.

that's not true, they've always been good to us, at the corporate level anyway. most dealerships are a joke, but if you call dearborn a lot of time they'll get on the dealerships ass to help you

So why can't they just make us sign a special form so we cant sue them???

Dear Lloyd,

Thank you for your message of 01/19/05 regarding the Ford Explorer. We
appreciate the time you have taken to inquire about U-Haul's policy on
renting to owners of this vehicle.

We regret any inconvenience you may have encountered in attempting to
rent a U-Haul trailer. Ford Motor Company is still working with U-Haul
to develop solutions that best serve the customers of both companies.
In the meantime, Explorer owners should understand that the Ford
Explorer is one of the safest vehicles on the road and is certainly a
very capable towing vehicle. Please feel free to use another towing
rental company for your needs.

We hope this information is of assistance. Ford Motor Company is
committed to maintaining a satisfying and long-term relationship with
our customers. Your loyalty is valued and appreciated. We would like
you to continue to enjoy the many Ford products and services that we
have to offer.

At Ford Motor Company, we consider the satisfaction of our customers as

What's Ford really going to do? U haul doesn't deserve anyoneones business because of they junk they rent, and their customer service attitude. They are almost doing you a favor by not renting you their worn out junk.

I don't get it. A couple of years ago, I was travelling appx 40 mph, and my left front tire came right off and went bouncing down the road. (it was my fault this happened, I forgot to torque the lug nuts!!) I would say that's a hell of a lot worse than a blowout. My brake rotor was ground away all the way to the hub, but other than that there was no other problems. Did I roll over? NO!!! 40MPH isn't slow, so I came to the conclusion that everyone who says that explorers roll too easily are full of crap.

Thanks

Today I saw a ford ranger towing a uhaul trailor, wats up with that arent they the basically same vehicle?

It has nothing to do with the vehicle itself, just it's bad name.

they rent junk ????

when i moved up north from florida after i packed the 26 foot penske triuck i realied i had no room for anything in my garage. Meaning my TOOLS and toys,
so i had to take my explorer and go rent a 12 foot trailer to tow behind the penske .. the Uhaul in florida did not care that i had an explorer to pick it up.
it cost me $89.00 for a 3 week rental.
that is wicked cheap for a trailer that long.
also the same triler at the other rental place would have cost 4 times that much...
the ride up here i had no problem at all...that wa back in November..

What other place did you find that would rent you a one-way trailer rental like U-Haul does? I've never heard of any other company that does it.

budget for one..

From Budget.com moving truck rental section:

Trailers

We do not rent trailers. Customers have found our 10' trucks work extremely well for moving smaller loads which do not require a 15' or 24' truck.

I have read through this entire thread, and have followed this whole circus of screw-haul versus the explorer since it started. I find the practice of selective discrimination in this country to be unacceptable as it is, and now an entire population of explorer owners are singled out based soley upon a financial "decision". What happens to all of us explorer owners who payed out OUR hard earned money to buy our vehicles to now only have to deal with lawyers and money grubbing sc*m sucking bottom dwellers forcing the depreciation of our investments? Throughout this whole thing, so much has been said as to the safety of our vehicles and to the well known "defects" they *might* have. ( I have yet to find one with my explorer... how about you? ) but there is the most basic of all subjects that has never been brought into it, HUMAN ERROR. Well it has to an extent, but i'm talking basic.

As far as the roll overs of the explorers are concerned, of course people want to blame ford and firestone for the tragic accidents that have happened in the past, under rated tires and manufacturing defects of tires and such may all well have been a key factor, but there is one piece of the puzzle that is mising, that would be BASIC human REFLEX.

Take for example ( and you guys/gals might find this to be a fun 4th of july prank this year ) you were to place, lets say, an M80 at a safe distance away from a group of several people and set it off without them seeing you light the fuse... 100% of those people will experience the same involuntary reflex of either jumping, crouching and/or flinching AWAY ( that means in the OPPOSITE direction ) of where the bang from the M80 originated. Why? Basic human reflex, that split second burst of adrenaline through the body which causes the typical "fight or flight" response, which makes them involutarily move away from the source. Thats all fine and dandy, if your free standing and have nothing constricting you or holding you down.

Now apply that same principle to a person driving, strapped in by a seatbelt ( hopefully ) in an obvious SEATED position. They hear a bang, lets say from the right front tire, first response to a normal person would be to move away from the sound, and that would include yanking the wheel with them to the left, what happenes? the force of the turn against an already leaning vehicle causes a rollover.

Why can a profesional driver sucessfully drive an explorer and intentionally have the wheel blown out and nothing happen? Because he/she's been trained to handle the situation WITHOUT reflex.

what it comes down to is this, what needs to happen is our DMV system needs to change how they issue licenses, and actually make sure people taking that ever popular "defensive driving course" for that 10% insurance reduction actually learned something about controlling a vehicle in an emergency situation such as a blowout, instead of just sitting there not paying no mind JUST to get that discount. I know personally how it can be, I had a blowout on my explorer ( shard of metal on the hiway ) but i thankfully have years of driving behind me ( some eduro's and other "smash em ups" ) and have been in that situation more than once, my explorer didn't roll, well it did...on all 4 wheels over to the side of the hiway, only because I had the experience in dealing with the situation without REFLEX.

But there are people out there that believe that the companies should bear the weight of todays drivers, and I disagree, I believe its an individuals own responsability to know how to operate whatever they may drive properly, before they drive it. Just because you *feel* safer in a particular vehicle, doesn't mean you know how to handle it. Untill that happens, we all suffer the consequences of the exact type of situation thats going on now.

As far as screw-haul is concerned, I've used their services for the last time, being that they should pay more attention to a customers driving record, than what kind of vehicle they drive. Selective discrimination at its best, something needs to be done.

ok...enough of my rant... :p

I'm ready for the :fire: ..heh heh... just kidding, i'm new to posting here, but i been a reader for quite a while, this is a great place to be, can't say it enough.
