the r-12 tap IS different. Some come with an attached hose (suspect those are ancient history) he top red one is this picture is of that category. I think it was $6.99 in it's day
The can fitting was "permanent" and pretty cheap (but it worked)
Below that with the yellow hose was a hose tap assembly, but the cam fitting was separable, and quality.... that was a "professional" piece of equipment... cost about $15 as I recall...
The piece that "cammed" onto the can came apart.... you could use it also with a can piercing valve to hook up to a manifold set...
and then there is just the can tap to hook up to a manifold...
In this day and age, the amateur cheapies are all but gone. If you don't have a charging setup, for a lot of folks the R-12 cans are all but worthless.

So in the end, your old man may not be as "cheap" as you think and "wiser". Mine was, and he's dead now.... but I am always amazed at how smart he was, more so as I get older.
