My dads cheap. His 92 Explorer needs some A/C recharging. He has a can of R12 but it needs some special tap or valve or whatever....Any ideas? I can take pictures of the can tomorrow if needed.

Well if the tap is anything like the tap for R-134a cans, then you can buy it at just about any auto parts store. I don't know if the R-12 tap is the same...

R12 and R134a are different but the R12 tap is still available at Autozone .. I think it cost 6 or 7 bucks

my R-134a tap cost me $5.99

the r-12 tap IS different. Some come with an attached hose (suspect those are ancient history) he top red one is this picture is of that category. I think it was $6.99 in it's day

The can fitting was "permanent" and pretty cheap (but it worked)

Below that with the yellow hose was a hose tap assembly, but the cam fitting was separable, and quality.... that was a "professional" piece of equipment... cost about $15 as I recall...

The piece that "cammed" onto the can came apart.... you could use it also with a can piercing valve to hook up to a manifold set...

and then there is just the can tap to hook up to a manifold...

In this day and age, the amateur cheapies are all but gone. If you don't have a charging setup, for a lot of folks the R-12 cans are all but worthless.

(in a separate thread I showed the procedure for using jugs [20#] of R-12)

So in the end, your old man may not be as "cheap" as you think and "wiser". Mine was, and he's dead now.... but I am always amazed at how smart he was, more so as I get older.

go ahead and convert his a/c to r134a r12 is no longer made and is $$$$ you also cant do r12 by yourself, its not user friendly or readily available liek r134a

you must be a licensed a/c technician to buy r12 per federal law
