BW1354 failure?

I know theres a worm gear on the electric T-case that does the shifting. They have been now the neutrel out in fast stop/brake then turn the corner. Mine has only done this once. I've seen them do this with very little wear. But it now lives behind a V8. I have 2 spare t-case.

its all good, i just read through it again. i disassembled the case today and def founf the culprit, besides the fact that the fluid in the case head turned to sludge at the bottom the shift fork is TOAST, its all kinds of bent up and is scarred very badly from the nylon guides being gone, part of which i found in the pickup screen near the pump, sure that wasnt helping anything, i also found one of the bearings that is a needle bearing, the needles had fallen out of it, thought that may have happened upon my disassembly. here's a picture of the shift fork, the rest of my pictures from the case will be going in glaciers thread.

Wow, that sucks. So are you just going to get a new case or rebuild that one and hope it's okay?

get a used one and put it back in, by the time i get a rebuild kit, new shift fork, new chain, new rear flange (driveshaft bolt rounded off and have to be cut off) a new bleeder nipple (mins been broken since i got the case but the jbweld finally gave way) ill spend as much as getting a used one. just gonna make sure to change the fluid at least 2 times in 1000 miles to flush it out and make sure to get rid of any old fluid and sediment that may be in it.

That's what I figured, and even if you rebuild the case you have, there may have been something wrong with the whole thing for that to even happen in the first place. The failure rate with these cases is obviously very low, too bad you managed to get a bad one in the batch.

yeah, i would be one of the lucky ones  haha, its whatever, i didnt take care of it like i should, so its partly my fault i suppose.

i should be getting another case tomorrow, so ill put it in and see what ive got from there. fingers crossed this will fix it and ill have a functional explorer again.

maybe ill get another linkage since the one i has disappeared with my original trans.

ok so this is interesting to me, i just went and looked at the shift forks that came out of the case. the plastic ones starts "1354 ..." but the metal one starts out "1350....." is the metal shift fork the same in between the 1350 and 1354? or did i get a bum 1354 with 1350 parts?

Either that, or the strong possibility they were made with the same parts. The two cases are so similar, I can see the possibility BW would trade parts during manufacturing for whatever reason. Maybe they had to get rid of some leftover 1350 parts when this one was made?

yea, that is very true, they prob use the same metal shift fork. is there anyway to tell the manufacture date on these things?

EDIT: i think the case was made in Nov of 1989  damn its old!! im only 4 years older than it, haha.

i love how these junkyards around here seem to think that a 1350 is the same thing as the 1354  3 hours round trip left me empty handed. going somewhere else tom and hopefully they know what a 1354 is!

Did you try through car-part.com? I've had decent luck looking through that site first..

yup, that's where i always go through, of the places i called 3 of them had electric cases marked as manual, and the one i actually went to didnt have the case the guy said they did. they brought out a new process case and i was just dumbfounded.

i just really hope the place im going to has the right thing, i asked him if it had a front yoke for a u-joint and i got the common response "one of my guys went and looked at it, so im not sure"

Ahh... I didn't notice you were going for a manual transfer case.. that harder to find..

There is a thread on here about how to manually control an electric shift transfer case using switches.. That the other option (don't need the 4x4 computer etc)..

I'm pretty sure the thread was here as I don't find much good information on other sites.. :)

I was going to say that too manual BW 1354 are hard to find. I think the FX4 rangers had them.

I was at the u pull today and saw tons of TC's already pulled. How much are they charging you? I may be able to get you one shipped cheaper..
