86 is no longer around. He more likely popped the trim piece off and used a white satin spray paint. If you plan on doing that, I'd lightly rough up the trim piece, use a primer based spray can for adhering paint to plastic and then cover it with your color of choice. You could possibly use deglosser instead of sanding to help bond the paint better.
i think i used something call "self etch primer" on mine(its clear) then a couple light even coats of White Krylon Bonds to Plastic, then Krylon Clear coat. held up great on mine
