Took the explorer home the other day, and everytime i let off the gas the truck would grind and shake, thought it was a u joint.Well after some playtime i was goin up my driveway and the rear jammed and the truck stopped dead, i threw it in reverse then rolled back a few feet to unbind whatever locked and parked it.I pulled the diff cover today and here's what i found :(

Looks like the pinion gear moved too much (axially) and was impacting against the carrier. As SuRrEaLNJ mentioned, it would probably be easier and more economical to swap in another rear axle.

The housing looks fine. The carrier, gears, and bearings should all be changed. I always advise against junkyard diffs. Whether or not you buy from me it's always better to use new parts.

Oi!! Is it just me or is there a tooth missing from that right side spider gear in the first picture? Nasty!

Time for some new guts. Assuming the housing is intact where the pinion bearings ride (or used to) I'd say it's time for an upgrade!! TruTrac all the way!!

I tried rebuilding one once after this happened. It failed too. I'm not sure if I did something wrong, or if the stress bent or ruined something that I did not see initially.

I ended up just replacing the whole thing with a "used" unit. It was easy and cheaper.

Do you know how it happened?

I found another rear, well 2 just makin sure ones lsd.Pretty sure the pinion bearing went, also the diff is warped a bit, i drove this this about 60+ kms like this lol.

dam now thats some road rash =o

Picked up a complete rear + springs for $200 cdn :D
