Just as the title states. This ticking noise is evident at start up. When I press the gas pedal to rev up the engine, the noise doesn't increase in volume, but does increase in rhythm along with RPM's. It is currently about 85 degree's here, and it happens at night and during the day, warm or cold. I can't hear it unless I'm on the outside of the vehicle, or the windows are down and something is beside me for the sound to bounce off of. Let me know what all of you think.

It's always a little hard to tell how loud it really is without being there in person, but my '04 probably sounds about the same - 65k miles on it. Mine ticks louder for about a minute after startup if it's set for a few days, but sometime after about 55K the noise kept on after warm-up. Mobile 1 seemed to quiet it a little compared to other brands of oil.

I've had other overhead cam engines that sounded the same and kept on going.
How many miles on it? I see you have the new cool 3-valve engine.

It has 83,300 miles on it.

I'm wondering if I should take it in and let them listen to it. They probably wouldn't tell me what they thought unless I paid some fee I'm sure. We will see.

Pop that driver's side cam cover ASAP (at least that's where it sounds like the majority of the suspect noise is coming from). Does the noise stay with engine RPM? I had a similar noise on my 2005 Mustang GT and it ended up being a broken roller in one of the rockers. I initially thought it was a cam phaser going out, and was content to leave it and fix it when I had the cash. Well it turned out to do quite a bit of damage as you can see.

Mine does same thing.. 2002, clicks when cold then eventually stops. Thought it was the aftermarket oil filter. Changed oil and filter then went away in a few days, now its back after 3 weeks of not doing it. May try an oil treatment..

The ticking noise I had would not go away, even when warm. I took it in to the dealer, they replaced the hydraulic lifters and rockers on the left side of the engine and it does not make the noise now.
