Joining the bandwagon, my 4L OHV build

Ok so I got to the in laws place today and dug out the crankshaft.

I measured a bunch of times on each journal and am certain about the numbers down to about the thousandth of an inch but the ten thousandth is somewhat questionable (my calipers are a cheap plastic kind)

Rod journals: 2.1255
Main journals: 2.2355 <- makes sense because the guy I bought it from said it was ground about .010 under stock

I am sure you can get main bearings for that size. The only thing I am not sure how to measure for is out of round on either journal. JD any ideas?

I would recommend measuring the journals yourself again just to be extra sure on the sizes before ordering bearings.

Huh thats weird! ! Why would any one just grind the crank journals but not the rod journals??for out of round you just gota measure all the way around and across the whole journal, pia! To me it sounds like it hasnt been machined. Your rods are right at the limit for bearing clearance and your crank really is .0008 if it had been machined and driven on at all it would be over .0010 .if you put many more miles on it it may wear to out side the bearing clearances, witch means low or no oil pressure.if it was me i would save the money from shipping/price of new bearings and just folk up the cash for a new one that come with the right bearings.just me tho

yea they sell them oversize for that. it seems like its good, but mr 4l ohv will confirm it

i did happen to see a 92 f150 that had the coil buckets, i didnt look anymore then that cause of the rain.
i didnt get any interior pieces i wanted, they were all gone or broken :(
i did nag a overhead console from a 2nd gen in ugly eddie tan color.

when you go get your coils, get me the tranny bolt, i wouldve but the ground was rocks and mud
I might not even go,depends on how this body lift works out!!wish i had some help on moday, this is going to be a PIA to do by myself! !:mad:its gota be a side bolt if i rember, check the top spring mount i have a habit of putting stuff there

Yea i hear you but you figure $15 for shipping $30 ish for bearings and you down to about a $100. Not cheap but its one of the most important parts on the motor so its critical that its good and within spec!

maniak, 13mm socket

I couldn't find any bolt that length. I looked in my pile o bolts from the 4.0 rebuild , and the pile from when we scrapped those two 91's and non were that lenght.

I found some about 1/2 shorter and others that were 3/4" longer. Some with what looks like that head size, and others looked bigger. They were the right thread though.. I checked them in the old 4.0 block I have lying in the back yard.

damnit! so it sounds like you had the smaller ones from the bottom and the bigger ones im using to hold it on the stand :(
im not sure if i can get out next weekend due to my bed being delivered but ill nag one from a junker if i dont find mine

yea, but i only have ~$100 left until payday :/
it can work but ill be in the hole until then

The two smellest ones go in the top i belive, largest in the bottom i think,ha thats why i said we should have labled them

Hahhaha i think all of them smelt bad!!

nothing compared to the inside. what was really bad was taking out the crank bolts. they had a very, very weird burnt oil smell to them. then my shower farts the next couple days smelled EXACTLY like it

the console was a dud :(
no power to it so i opened it and the screen had a big black burn on it

Sounds like it to me

I put a thin film of high temp rtv around the outside of the plugs and use a BIG socket to beat them in.for the threaded ones i use the same rtv but i use a 1/2 socket driver to put them in

i have some rtv that came with my gaskets. is that it?
howed you use a 1/2" ratchet? mine are 6-point not 4-sidededed. seems i just need a very large allen wrench for mine.

ill get on that when i get home. cause i need the freeze plugs in to paint unless i stuffed rags in the holes lol

You just want to use RTV that is oil resistant. I used "right stuff" on both the 4.0 and the 460.

As for using a ratchet, There are allen head tips for ratchets. That is what I used on mine too. I rarely ever use those L shaped allen wrenches.

They look like these.

oh cool lol. my grandpa has a big L one thatd work but thatd prob be so much easier to use. ill prob buy just the one i need, so i can save for a good set later on.
the rtv with the gaskets is prob oil resistant isnt it? i mean it would make sense. sorry i dont have it here to look so inno.

jd, would it be possible to shove the cam in and assemble the heads to check for pushrod length? or does it have to be completely built first?
could meausre wednesday if youre not busy, assemble monday(ill make sure pushros get here by then), and then next wednesday put the fluids in after i get paid
but... if its not possible then nvm
