Looking to put a budget 12" sub in my girlfriend's '03 Explorer. I'm going to build a small sealed box to fit behind the third row, so she can still make use of it. Is a rear firing wedge type box the only thing that will fit? I haven't pulled measurements yet, would like to downfire if I could. Also would like a suggest on the sub. A few I'm thinking of are:

Rockford Fosgate P2D412
Infinity Reference 1262w
Alpine SWS-1243D
Pioneer TS-W309D4
MTX TR5512-44
Kicker CompVR

Looking for a 12" under $100 that'll sound good in a sealed box basically. Sub and box design suggestions? Thanks for any input...

Out of those, I'd pick the Alpine.

I've always been a fan of JL Audio. I like them because you don't need alot of power to make them sound good.

I suggest the WX....

or the W0v2...

They both retail for $120, but well worth it. And would probly have better sound quality than any of those. IMO

As far as the box, if you're gonna build it you can go as wide as need be to get the air space the sub needs. Depth is is not too limited.

What about this?

Thanks for the pic, helped give me a visual. I wanted to downfire, so I was going to build a box, but if there simply isn't enough room, maybe I'll do a preloaded setup like that. How does the one 12 sound? I think it'll be plenty for her.

If there isn't enough room for a 12, would there be enough room to downfire a 10"? I would measure myself, but I'm on the road working (out of town), and I'm also trying to keep it a secret from her, ha.

JL audio... A W0 or WX would be in budget. Would they be comparable in loudness to the others? I know JL makes good stuff. Would a Planet Audio or Hifonics amp be good to run with these? I know JL amps are pricey, got to stay within budget. I've had good luck with Hifonics amps, but I only ran them in Infinity and JBL speakers.

Thanks for the help guys!

You can mix any amp with any sub as long as the impedence and power is right. I'm not familiar with Hifonics, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I was happy with that 10 in. at first it was powered with my 4 ch amp, using the 2 rear channels bridged. then I got a 2nd amp and put it under the middle seat on the 2nd row, it was an RF punch 150w.

That was more than enough for me, but some people said it was too much, some it was not enough, only you can decide if you like it :)

I was wondering what type of power is needed, could i just splice the wires for the stock sub and add more and if i can, what is the max for additional sub(s)

A factory amp is not gonna be enough power to run an aftermarket sub efficiently. Plus, its not as clean as aftermarket.

Different subs have different RMS/Max ratings. Good rule of thumb......the more the sub is cost wise, the more power it will need.

im gonna soung so ghetto right now but i have 12 in mids and i was wondering would it be possible to add another amp then power the new 12 mids to only run on the sub frequencies

Get a 10 that will work in a .5 cubic box & down fire it. I have my sub downfiring. It worked best in my Ranger this way. Plus your sub is protected.

I just took some measurements the other day and there's plenty of room to downfire a 10" sub! Could prob downfire a 12", but I think it'd be too much for her. I think I've decided to go with the JBL GTO 1014D, and run around 5-700w RMS to it. Sealed and downfiring that should be plenty for her. I'm going to build a downfiring box (JBL suggests .75 cuft sealed), wedge shaped. How much do you think I need to raise the woofer off the floorboard, 2"? I'm excited to start it! ha

I have mine 3 inches above the floor. 2will be plenty I believe
