ignition control module

Quick question, Does 91 Explorer have waste spark DIS ignition like my 2000?

Yes. The main difference is the 1st generation utilizes an ignition control module (ICM) because the PCM was not advanced enough to handle all the functions. In 1996 the functions of the ICM were incorporated into the PCM.

I had a 91 and always used the copper core plugs,

I still use copper core plugs (discontinued Champion Truck Plug) on my 2000 Sport.

Thanks 2000SR...

I just replaced my Motorcraft double platinum with Autolite single platinum AP103 plugs. The Motorcraft were installed for 10 years and 170,000KM, and I notice the left bank plugs had worn center electrode and very good ground electrodes, and the right side had the opposite wear pattern. I would say the plugs were at the end of their service life, with the gaps worn to .080 on the left side.

As the Auotlite are platinum only on the center electrode I expect that the right bank plugs will wear fast and the left will not wear much due to waste spark ignition design.

As you know the right side is more work to change, and I was wondering how long the single plats will last on that side. Same as copper I would guess.

Ap103

I had new Autolite AP103 single platinum plugs installed by the tow truck driver when I purchased by Sport. It was abandoned on the interstate and he obtained title to it to recover his tow fees. Turned out it had a bad crankshaft position sensor. I drove it for three years (10K miles) before installing the Champion Truck Plugs.

They were being discontinued ($2 each) so I bought three sets which should last at least fifteen years (I'm 67) even with the supercharger installed. They have heavy duty copper electrodes (inner and outer). I agree that your plugs should last about as long as standard duty copper electrodes on the one bank. Then you can replace just that bank with dual platinum plugs.

Just curious, what condition were the Autolite's in when you took them out after 10K?
