Restart of Accessing Fuel Pump from above thread

has anyone cut a access hole for the fuel pump on a 3rd gen? I was looking at where about where I would have to cut the hole and looks like it would be right behind the front passenger seat thats about where the pick-up area is mold in the tank and info would be great thanks

Looking up from the underside (as easy as that is!) there is a circular indentation near the low point of the tank of my 02 V6 early build eddie bauer. I would guess that's where the fuel pump sits...always been a trust but verify type though. Does anyone have first hand knowledge? Very tempted to do the cut out over the pump to make an access panel...thanks to all once again!

PS-Sorry for double post but my reply on original wound up on page 2 and not sure if anyone would see it. Also would plan to use an electric sheet metal shear used for ductwork to minimize risk of cutting too deeply!

I have never cut an access hole to an Explorer family veichle. But, I am into Roadmaster Station Wagons and have cut them in those. The wagon tank is held on by straps. So, I could actually lower the tank an inch or so, without dropping it completely. I cut the sheet metal with a dremmel. It was easy to do and couldn't go in very far. I probably went through a half a dozen cutting wheels.

Somebody on this site did it. Behind the front passenger seat there is what looks like a patch in the floor. The goodies are under there, but only just. You better use a short blade to do the cutting!

I'm not sure the patch defines the hole, but it's under there, close by. Find the Thread for this and see where he cut.

Story so far: checked fuse, relay, inertia switch and all seemed okay. decided to do floor pan cut. Have helpful info for how to cut for future users...use sheet metal shears, cuts in about 5min!

Next came a second cut to reach the main connector to see if 7 or 8 pin...was an 8pin. Not sure on how to determine the pin layout. Tested each possible combo and came up with the following results but not sure which two pins should get the surge signal sent for several seconds after key goes on...hoping someone can let me know by checking the three pix:

not sure if I understand your question but it is to right side of pump and it resides near the chassis rail. It has 8 pins...

Is that on the right side as you're leaning in the door to cut the floor, the right side as you're driving the car, or the right side as you're cutting the floor from kneeling where you took out the passenger seat?

Update: bought a new pump...Delphi and hooked up both connectors. flipped key but no pump sound! battery is getting low from sitting, playing, and trying to fix (only 11.5volts at battery). One trouble shooting flow chart said you need at least 12.4v at battery. Put on charger at low 2A setting...confused now...thanks to all once again!

This picture is taken from outside of passenger side. The left side of picture is toward rear, the right side towards front and the connector with the probes is between fuel tank and starboard (right) outer chassis rail. The black thing at the bottom of the photo is the wire cover that runs along the outside edge of the passenger side floorboard. here is someone else's similar photo. mine was taken from a similar angle
