09 Ford Explorer xlt 4.6
Hi there, I have a 09 Ford Explorer xlt, with the 4.6... factory with a 1 1/4 hitch and 4 pin... I have a brake controller from my pervious vehicle, seen that I have a factory plug on my Ford Explorer, plugged it in a nothing... further looking, the factory plug is not extend to the rear anywhere? Also the relays and fuses are not in the block... what’s the deal? It has a factory brake controller plug, but there no wiring harness for a 7 pin connector!? Anybody help?

If you have the 1 1/4 hitch, it only comes with the 4 flat plug. You'd need to run the brake feed, reverse and aux wires.
The models equipped with 2" receiver have factory 7 pin harness.

Thanks man, but why the factory brake controller plug, it has to have wires running somewhere? Do they run some where and just end? If so I could just splice wires off that and add the relays and fuses... I don’t understand fords logic of the V8 model, with a six speed, and only 1 1/4 hitch, but still add a brake control plug that I can never use? Kinda weird... but thanks for your reply

They probably all have the same wiring harness.

My 2006 V6 without the tow package also had the plug under the steering column. The wires were live... 12V positive on one... another got 12V positive when I stepped on brake. I peeled back some of the loom around the wiring for the four flat Trailer connecter, and about 5 inches back I found I blue wire that was the output from the brake controller.
When I wired in the 7 pin round connector, I had to run a feed from the fuse box under hood back to it for the battery charge line.

I forgot to add one more thing, I recall reading a post on this forum that another non-tow package explore owner did not find the wire like I did back by the rear bumper. He reported tracing it from under the column and I believe it terminated somewhere on the passenger side by the back door if I recall correctly. But I would definitely peeled back some loom by the back bumper and check there first
