Today I smelled fuel on my daughter's 1996 Explorer AWD V8 and tracked it to a leaking Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (schrader valve) on the fuel rail.

However after hours of searching i can't find a replacement. Does anyone know a part number or where I should look? I already checked the local pick-a-part and they don't have any V8 Explorers with engines intact.

If not does anyone know the specs (thread pitch, size, pressure etc) so I can look for a generic schrader valve that would work?

All help is appreciated.

They LOOK identical to tire valves, but ARE NOT! Must resist gasoline. Have you tried Ford Parts? Early on in EFI, they had replacement parts for the systems, connectors, and such, and may have had the fuel Schraders. Don't think V-8 Schrader would be any different. Worst came to worst, get a whole fuel rail (would have to be V-8) already having a Schrader. Alternate fix for leaking one would be a good stout screw on cap with fuel resistant seal inside (not tire stem cap).

Thank you for the heads up!

I called the local dealer parts dept and they only have a part number for the plastic cap that goes over the valve. I've searched on parts.ford.com, with no luck. I've tried autozone, advanced, auto, oreilly's, summit, jegs, rock auto, and heck even ebay and nothing. I've even searched for the part using later year Explorers and other model vehicles that had the 5.0, still nothing.

In fact i've only come across a few fuel pressure relief valves and they are listed for the 4.6 V8. I have no idea if they are the same size.

Found a used complete fuel rail on ebay for $59.99 with $54.50 shipping, seem like alot to replace a valve.

That's why i reached out to y'all for help :)

Well, ya don't want 60psi gasoline pressure leaking out under your hood! Worst comes to worst, see if a METAL tire valve stem cap fits those threads, and "glue" it on with good RTV Silicone rubber. Easily removable, should last pretty long. Check for leaks!

I'm sure the salvage yards in your area will have a V8 that you could get one off of. Look around and see if you can find a speed shop that might carry them. I know they make adapters for the V8's.

Here ya go...

That is the one valve I found, but everyone lists it for the 4.6 V8.

Since i haven't found anything else i guess it is worth a try. It will be here Monday. I'll let you know if its a match.

To me, it would be ridiculous to use differing parts which do exactly the same thing on different products or models. But, ya never know. Used to be you could count on all of Ford's bigger cars having 9-inch rear axles. Today, idea still good with 8.8 across the board, but Shraders??

If this fails, there are many V8 explorers in salvage yards that you can get a donor off of.

Thank you to everyone who provided assistance and information.

Without finding much information i decided to order a Motorcraft CM3461 valve from Amazon, and it worked!

So for anyone else in the future that needs to replace the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail of a 1996 Explorer V8 the CM3461 valve is what you need.

Anyone know if this same one / part number will work on 4.0 OHV fuel rail ?? (P.O. stripped mine just discovered- outer threads)
Or any luck finding one online designated for it ? .........before I head out to junkyard... local Ford dealer closed today and sounds like they wont be able to help anyway due to age of vehicle...

So, I bit the bullet and swung by junkyard today (not wanting to wait for delivery and find out the CM3461 is slightly off for my 4.0 OHV ....but as I / we pretty much expected they are the same ...at least for the 4.0 OHV and 5.0 ....and as Iris pointed out "it" / part number CM3461 also works on the 4.6 V8 and is associated as "only" / specifically for the 4.6 ...but once again it's same in every way on all 3 engines.....I got one off a second gen 5.0 while I was there for info/ confirmation for all and as you can see they are the same... so now we know us 4.0 OHV' ers can order CM3461 as well.--- ON EBAY COMPATIBILITY CHART IT COMES UP AS "NOT" COMPATIBLE FOR MY 4.0..... WRONG!
