Dremel 575 right angle drill for exhaust manifold stud drill

Nice job. When I do them I always put a peice of steel stock or large impact socket between the motor mount and the engine plate for safety. I also drop it back down on that steel stock and let the drivers side go back down to "tilt" the motor to the drivers side.

definitely my safety fault.

Nice work Bazz. Great job planning and executing. And thanks for all the pics, sure others will find them helpfull.

Great pictures
Great job

So in your opinion, is there any chance of doing it without lifting the engine?

Should be very complicated for the front two cylinders broken top studs, because of no clear drilling angle sight at all.

as you can see in following photo, after engine lifted about 2 inch you will get pretty good drilling control vision sight to all of the top broken threads:

***in case of lifting the engine fan shroud and upper radiator hose removal it is a must! Also make sure all of the harnesses and pipes are ok during motor rising up. Transmission and driver side engine mount fasteners complete removal is not necessary.

Especially for the cylinder number two top stud seating exactly behind welded-to-frame shock tower.

Warped manifold inspection:

cylinder 4 flange rusted (seal broken) and cylinder 1 flange totally out of flatness spec

Hard to tell from your pic, but is it just the front pipe that is warped? Can you measure with a feeler gauge.

I concur with everything you have said. #1 and #5 are literally buried in there. Remove, remove and remove, then tilt engine as far as possible.

BTW, I took a belt sander to my manifolds and reused them. With composite gaskets, rtv and double nutted the studs. That was 5 yrs ago.

Yes the front pipe flange warped for maybe 1.5-2 milimiters or so
