Got new Explorer, 2023 3.0L 4WD. Might need to disconnect the battery for20 min and do a reset. I filled up and the computer says 273 miles to empty… I was hoping for 380-400 miles.

Not sure if it’s from idling on the dealers lot, but I reset the trip/fuel Econ and stuff via the steering wheel controls. I hope I get at least 320-350 miles from a full tank. I was thinking it my show 450 miles for 4WD. Going from a 650-700 plus range, to 273 miles topped off, makes me feel like I bought an EV… maybe tomorrow it will reset.

What are you getting?

Right now with the colder weather I'm getting 20 MPG. That gives me a range of about 300 miles or a bit more. I fill up once I get down to a 1/4 tank or so. In summer I was getting 25 MPG and a lot of that is because we have better gas then . So a range of over 400 miles.

My 2023 Aviator with 683 miles on it has the 3.0L, 400 HP engine and I'm getting 18.7 mpg according to the last fillup. That is calculated on approximately 50/50 city/hwy driving. Using 91-octane top-tier gas from Petro-Canada (merged with Suncor in 2009).

I hope something resets…

I topped off to a full tank last night with 273 miles of range. Drove home, tried to reset what I could, but it’s showing 272 miles. I will give it a week I guess. But if I can’t get a minimum of 330 miles doing mostly highway, this is not going to work for me. My whole ride home from the dealership was highway.

From the Owner's Manual.

"Calculating Fuel EconomyYour vehicle calculates fuel through the trip computer average fuel function. See Information Displays(page 110). The first 1,000 mi (1,600 km) of driving is the break-in period of the vehicle. Resetting average fuel in your trip computer after 2,000–3,000 mi(3,200–4,800 km) provides a more accurate measurement."

I get around 17.5 mpg in my 2020 ST driving almost exclusively in city traffic, including up and down hills, in So. California. It's been pretty much like that since we got the car new.

Wintertime average is 17 1/2 mpg and fill up today indicated 315 miles - distance to empty
Summertime average is 19 mpg and typical fill up indicates 340 miles - distance to empty
This is all city driving.

Also, I've read here and on the Explorer ST forum that it's not recommended to drive the vehicle with less that 1/4 tank of gas because it may cause issues with the fuel pump located in the gas tank.

There have been reports of owners not being able to start their Explorers when parked on an inclined driveway. Some have been able to coast down to a more level spot and were able to start it then.

The trip computer in Fords has been historically higher than actual, about 10% higher on all of my recent Fords, five Mark VII's and four 2nd gen Explorers.

Wait until you are used to driving your new vehicle, several hundred miles, a few fillups etc. Stop unplugging the battery, it takes a long time afterwords to relearn the many prior trips(your driving habits(You just erased them all)).

To calculate actual fuel mileage, the proper way has always been to fill up every time, write down the total miles and fuel every time, and then do the easy math and write that down every time. The real mpg will go up and down slightly, but with an actual record of tank miles and gallons of fuel, the mpg is clear. But don't rely on the trip computer, it will fool you to believe the mileage is better than it really is. I put about500k miles on these past eight Fords with the trip computer, message center, they are all a bit off. The DTE is always optimistic with a near full tank, and it drops fast once you get under 75 miles to go.

There was no way I could find of putting it in neutral while the engine is off and in accessory mode. The rotary shifter will not turn out of P. I had to call a tow truck twice. First time the fuel pump got damaged and the second time I had to get more than 3 gallons of gas added to start it. Both times there were more than 50 miles to empty according to the computer, just under a 1/4 tank.

When I got my 2015 Sport, it came off lease with 18,000 mi. The computer showed 16.9mpg as the average over the lease period. After 70,000 miles of tracking gas mileage through a computer program, entering every purchase, the average was 16.7mpg. So the Sport was replaced with a 2022 ST. Picked it up with 19,000 on the odo and 19.2mpg on the computer. Great, better gas mileage!! After my first full tank fill-up...16.7. The car computer now shows 19.0. I guess its me. We'll see what it does on my upcoming trip from IL to FL.

There is a way to put it in neutral without the engine running. Had to Google it as I had no idea how to.

The vehicle has what once was referred to as a Brake Shift Interlock system for just such an occasion. I believe this is the same thing. Page 199.

I will never let it go under 1/4 tank after having it leave me stranded twice. I'm not about roll it out of my driveway which is on an incline into the street and then not have it start and be stuck blocking the street. Hence, why I called Roadside Assitance and they came with gas. The other time it stalled going up a hill and burned the fuel pump on my way to fill up the tank at a gas station.

Did a fuel warning light come on prior? In Texas I try to stay above a 1/4 tank to keep the pump insulated with fuel a bit and in I went off road at higher angles.
My 95 Bronco had no low fuel warning light, but a 33 gallon tank. Decided to drive it till empty and see how many miles I got out of the tank. When I ran out of fuel, I pored the 2.5 gallons of fuel I had in and tried to start it. Learned I needed 5 gallons to prime the pump when empty, and that burned up the pump cranking away with 2.5 gallons of fuel. On the flip side, the tank was empty and I got to put SVT higher flow fuel pump in.
My 2018 F150 had the 36 gallon tank, and I could go to work and back for two weeks and still be at 1/4 tank (getting 18-18.5 mpg).

I was worried with some on like saying they get 13.5 to 16 mpg with the 3.0 Explorer, as I figured about 20 mpg plus for my normal driving. I think the computer is adjusting. Hope to see how it works out and if using 91/93 fuel does much for range (doubt it would be worth it for daily commute, but for trips and vacations 380 to 400 miles would be better for me.

This last fillup I averaged only 15 MPG with short trips and colder temps at lower speeds. I usually get above 17 or 18 average. I never let the low fuel warning come on anymore as I don't trust the 50 miles to empty estimate after stalling twice. In cold weather and using remote start with a 1/4 tank is very risky with this vehicle on an incline.
