I need to change my exhaust manifold

It's leaking, and I know it's time. My 98 has 320,000 miles, and this is something I know has been coming a while. it's a 5.0 and the leak is on the passenger side. I have a 97 Aerostar that will be my backup vehicle, as soon as i get some front tires on it, and that will allow me to take my...

    Cam position sensor questions...

A few of you were incredibly helpful back here, when I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my 98 5.0 explorer. Hope I can repay some of that karma with this little discovery. Two days ago, I started to get what i thought was a lifter noise. I thought, crap, I just had this engine...

    Totally stumped

yep. I figure I'll get another 200,000 miles, I hope. And it's amazing how much power it has, I forgot how ballsy this truck is.

    Totally stumped

Fixed!!! Ok, for all you who were helpfgul- and believe me, you all helped by helping me think of other things to test/try, I am here to tell you what the final resolution of the trouble was. I took this to a mechanic who came highly reccomended to me. I tend not to trust anyone with my...

    Totally stumped

Cancelled the ECM order. I have a guy who is (suposedly) capable of reading all the stuff on the truck, and confirming (for SURE) that the ecm is hosed. So I will be having it towed to him to confirm diagnosis. I wil be confirming wihtn him that he has the ability to make the necesary repairs...

    Totally stumped

But if I don't swap the PATS module, the ECM has to be reflashed? What's with the PATS and ECM?

    Totally stumped

No, I drove it hjome after exhaust work. It ran, poorly, but it ran. Only after parking it in the garage did it cease to start. No codes. I may yet do this, but the engine would run at least try to start if compression, spark and fuel arrived at the proper times. It does not. $140 at...

    Totally stumped

After a few seconds, yes. Don't know for sure I have not removed the mechanism, only the switch, it is impossible to improperly install the switch. THe engine has metal shields around several (but not all) of the spark plug holes. On these, it is impossible to get a socket onto the...

No correlation between compression variation and the glowing exhaust. I will be ordering a new ECM today. Hope that's it.

    Totally stumped

I have not replaced the crank sensor. I have had the front of the engine off, and i remeember what it was like just to get to the dang thing, so I'm not anxious to try to do so.

it does not run. It will not start. The cats are brand new, OEM spec cats.

    Totally stumped

I have an Innova scantool+ computer interface and software. It won't monitor sensors on a non running engine, so far as I know. Even when I had it running, it never ever once threw a code. The entire exhaust system has been replaced. All cats. From the manifolds to the tailpipe. And...

    Totally stumped

Oh: and in February I had to change the water pump. A bolt broke in the block necessitating removal of the timing chain cover to remove. The inside of the engine looks basically new- it has had a steady diet of synthetics since day one, and the result is the valve train and timing chain look as...

    Totally stumped

Whole system from manifolds back was replaced. Additionally, I have done compression tests (early in the game, actually) and I have between 90 and 140 psi. The variation (i'm sure) is because I have a crappy compression tester. The plugs in which I could get it tight, I got 140 psi. The...

    Totally stumped

Plugs good, (less than 20,000 miles) and all had a light grey ash. (very small amount) Platinum plugs. This is a 98, so no distributor- coil packs. I'm thinking that the fuel/spark arriving at the appropriate time is indeed a possible concern. Which would be, as you say, ECM. I will...

    How many miles??

I have 288,000 on my 98 XLT 5.0 awd. Replaced the transfer case chain at 160,000 miles. Replaced water pump at 220,000 miles. At the present, it has crapped on me, and I'm pulling my hair out (see "totally stumped" thread) trying to find out what's causing it to not run.

    Totally stumped

OK for the diagnosticians on the board, here's a real stumper. 1998 Explorer XLT. 5.0 liter v8. Increasing driveability issues between 11/29 and 12/3 288,000 miles. Took to dealer for diagnosis. Dealer claimed it was a clogged cats, claimed it improved when the O2 sensors were removed...

    Stupid newbie front axle question
