Cold Start - strange high idle until warm

Oops, no I meant I'll service the tranny fluid.

    2013 - wet PTU

Welcome to the mysterious PTU leak club! Fingers crossed Ford will ship me my new PTU by November 😐

    2013 - wet PTU

Impending doom is why I opted to buy a new one vs bandaiding mine. With winter approaching here in New Hampshire, I need a 100% vehicle. My plan is to very carefully bench inspect the PTU that comes out. With the expert advice of ecoboost_xsport, hopefully I'll be able to determine if this PTU...

GHG2496 - That describes almost exactly my situation! No I haven't located the source of the leak. Now I'm glad I'm not the only one who is seeing this. I mean, royally sucks for us, but good for the next guy maybe. My thinking is that the gray factory rtv like stuff that seals the big front...

Yeah it'll show that message AFTER the PTU has suffered irreparable damage due to overtemp 😂

Hmm...I was cruising PIU Workshop Manual and came across this little nugget. Has anyone ever seen the "PTU Oil Life Monitor" or done a PTU Oil Life Monitor Reset? Copy and paste:

Cold Start - strange high idle until warm

The more I read, the less concerned I'm becoming. Still annoyed though. However, this may be perhaps a good test case to make SURE there isn't something off. Winter is coming (my best Game of Thrones voice) so I want to ensure I don't have something that will bite me in the middle of a New...

Cold Start - strange high idle until warm

Or I should say, I've never had it THIS pronounced to where it holds 1500 for such an extended period. And the idle hunting. That's what had be me concerned than anything.

Cold Start - strange high idle until warm

Yikes and this is the first EFI vehicle I've ever encountered that does it. Between family and company cars. Maybe 20? 30?

I'm sure you've tried but there are a LOT of stripped "something" extraction tools. I know there is zero room to work but you may be able to find a stubby version. I have ones for external hex bolts in tight spaces, but not internal in tight spaces. Thankfully haven't had the need. Yet.

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

However, my 2013 has a drain plug. As-built part.

Good point. Slight edit to post above for clarity.

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong. From what I can deduce, there are two solid options to any PTU. I'm going to assume that these dictate the part number and DIRECT swap compatibility. Forget about Turbo vs NA for the moment since some PTU's show they are for both. -Drain plug (yes or no)...

    2013 - wet PTU

My thought was more about the hot oil. I'm quite sure I am way over engineering it as I usually do. And if the PTU gets to near 500 I'd think we'd be looking at an explosion. When I was driving and looking at the Trans and PTU Temps, they were sub 200.

    19E02 - Powertrain Control Module Reprogramming ???

I did my own. I have IDS and updated a couple of modules to the latest calibration including the PCM. I didn't notice any discernable change.

Cold Start - strange high idle until warm

On a cold soak start, I see this very odd idle until the engine warms up. Feels a touch rough. I hate it. Freaks me out. With any other vehicle, this would be cause for a serious investigation of a problem. -Cold engine -Crank -1500 -1100 with slight bounce -800 -600 (at normal temp) I've read...

    2013 - wet PTU

That was my thought too. White = meh. But compared to NO teflon, something is better than nothing IMO. Since my PTU is being replaced, I'll be mindful during my YEARLY maintenance. Made a thread about it in case you or anyone else following this thread missed it...

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

I'm not preemptively replacing anything, though I have been known to do that. I have a less than insignificant PTU leak which has grounded the vehicle in my opinion.

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

I'm not playing the lifetime fluid game. I'm changing mine at least yearly. It's $20 insurance.

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

My original PTU already shows with a cooler so that can't be the only difference. But I know, some cooling they got going. In some cases it might be more like a warmer. Return. That's a dirty word haha

PTU differences - turbo vs N.A.

LONG story short, I'm replacing my PTU due to a semi significant leak. The amazing ecoboost_xsport and I have been going back and forth with this. I have a 2013 PIU 3.7L non-turbo - my PTU has a cooler and drain plug. The major question is, what is the difference in PTU's for Explorers WITH a...

2013 PIU Remote Keyless Locks and Start Procedure

I also noticed rather unfortunate range on my '13. I have a phone charger in my cig lighter on my still installed Havis police center console. Power coming from whatever police power wiring harness in there. I don't have factory power or usb. Fobs are OEM with new batteries.

Fk. Tasca already had my money. For future reference then. However shipping times from RI to NH is 1 day vs from MN which would be, I dunno. I'm trying to minimize downtime which is already considerable

    2013 - wet PTU

Soooo... In my search for a new PTU, I called Tasca. (Best price for a new PTU at $843.55 + shipping, unless another dealer on here has one handy *wink*) The very helpful rep mentioned that the updated stronger better PN eccoboost gave me, DG1Z-7251-F, doesn't show as the 'correct' PTU factory...

I tend to go overboard but I plan on getting a high temp oil safe tape of some flavor. This seems to fit the bill https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075KLK4LK/?tag=serious-20

    2013 - wet PTU

Truth be told I forgot to put something on the threads but as ecoboost mentioned, use a Teflon tape vs thresd locking loctite. You want to seal the threads, not freeze the plug in place.

An interesting thing to watch the other day was the transmission and PTU temp. I used Forscan to live monitor the PID values of the sensors. Didn't want to lug around my laptop with IDS. (Please no lectures about driving and observing my phone). Depending on if I was actually driving or idling...

    2013 - wet PTU

Based upon the recommendation of the amazing eccoboost_sport, my own research, and observations, I'm biting the bullet and getting a new PTU. I do not want to take any chances. From here on, I am considering it a necessary 30k service. Maybe more often based upon these horror stories. There...

If I do need to buy a new PTU (I'm preparing for that) vs just a front seal, what other parts or tools do I need to buy? My mechanic is very accommodating when it comes to me supplying parts. It says I need a new compression seal. AllData R&R Sheet attached. PTU: DG1Z-7251-F Compression...

I'm concerned that it may not just be the front seal but the case seal. Can I spray brake clean the white seal and monitor? I don't want to completely melt it.

    2013 - wet PTU

Not happy. Took an hour drive yesterday. Maybe 30 miles. Looked this morning and the bottom front of the PTU is wet with fresh gear oil along the bottom, bottom right bolt and slightly up the side of the PTU case facing the motor. I don't believe it is coming from the front plastic seal since it...

VCT (variable cam timing) seals leaking - 2013 PIU

2013 PIU, 94K, well maintained. Synthetic oil. I had planned on doing my plugs and PCV before winter, so since the manifold is off, why not address my VCT seal leak too. Also called a VVT (variable valve timing) it seems. Also, since I have the valve cover off, is there any advantage to...

The dual hose is next time. For my super immediate need, I'm going to shove a 2mm OD 1mm ID hose down the vent tube to give it just a little air when I fill. Amazon, about $8 and I'll have it Friday. Not perfect but it's something. And regarding the spinning, noted. This transverse stuff is...

    2013 - wet PTU

For a quick fix, I was thinking dual hoses off my existing single barb fitting on the PTU, not drilling and tapping a second. For an upgraded bench built unit, that would be an awesome upgrade. Also, I finished my filling finally. Went through the gears in my driveway, checked for immediate...
