    Oil Treatment ?

Those oil additives are nothing but snake oil guaranteed to lighten your wallet. Check out this link, which is long, but very informative. Draw your own conclusions. Ivan Dead Link Removed

    Coolant change in 94 explorer

The Preston Super Flush kit thingies are great!!! Just cut your line and insert the Tee as described on the instructions. Once you're done flushing and the water runs clear, let the water drain out from the pet **** as much as it will. When done, tighten the pet ****, but leave the cap off the...

    104k on a 1992, what to expect?

Here are a few tips to look out for in a '91 - '92: AC - VERY, very, very problematic for the '91 - '92's. They got most of the bugs worked out by the '93 model. Make sure it works and there are no leaks in the system. Run it for at least 20 minutes and monitor it. Ifit starts dumping warmish...

    tornado air system

I think a while back Consumer Reports ran a little write up on these "Air Tornados" ... Just a bunch of malarky guaranteed to lighten your wallet, if nothing else... Ivan

    rocking explorer

Have you had it aligned since your lift install? Sounds like with that much lift you might have changed your caster enough to create what is called a "Death Wobble". Front ends get really shakey and really violent at higher speeds if caster isn't dealt with...just a thought.. Ivan

im a first time explorer owner and love it...but

Hey.. Sounds like you're on your way despite some of the more typical "setbacks" to expect from an Explorer of that vintage. Not to rain on your parade, but here are a couple of item's to keep you eye on unless they've already been dealt with: Power Steering pump: It'll start leaking at the...

    Brake Problem

Benson... Check my recent reply to a similiar ABS Problems post in "General Explorations". It was posted by some guy named Tech. It's an off the wall fix (at least for me), but it worked for my '91 Navajo. Let me know if it works for you... I'm curious... Ivan

    refinishing alluminum wheels?

My wheels were in the same boat as yours... too many knicks and chips from wheeling. Have you looked into maybe having themy powder coated? I did... it was $25.00 per wheel, a wide array of colors to boot, or a "silvery" look if you want to keep somewhat stock looking. Powder coating is more...

    Straight Pipe

Why in the world would you want to do that??? Apart from a straight pipe being obnoxiously too loud, you are setting yourself up for some really major fines for tampering with the emmission system on your car. It would make renewing your registration impossible. Explorers started out in '91...

    Shackles or Blocking

Since your rig is relatively new, the shackle route would be the best way to go. If it were much older, say a couple of years with some good trail hours behind it, I would then go with the add a leaf route since springs would be sagging somewhat a this point. Besides, shackles are a quick and...

    Radius arm bushing replacement

I don't know if the statute of limitations is up on this or not, but there was a recall on Radius Arm Bushing replacement by Ford/Mazda a while ago for that particular vintage. I had mine replaced for free by the Mazda dealer. Might be worth checking into. If not, the do it yourself route is...

    Explorer Sport lift

If the shackles are the one's I'm thinking of, they are part of a 2" boost kit for Jeep Cherokees. In reality, they give 1.5" of rear lift with a 1/2" spacer block to complete the full 2" of lift. They are pretty bullet proof and they are also greasable (zirk fitting) Ivan

    Slave cylinder cost? Ripoff!

Pete.. I've heard the same thing about sticking with the OEM slave cylnder. I did some pricing comparisons myself with places like Grand Auto, Kragen, Pep Boys, etc. and they weren't all that much cheaper than what you've found from Ford. I say bite the bullet and stick with the Ford one for...

    Whats the deal with SpiralMax?

    Manual Trans - Rough Shift

Pete... Sounds very symptomatic like it's your clutch. First clue is the mileage..Explorer clutches typically give up the ghost around 115K, at 143k, you got some bonus mileage out of yours. The other clue was the slight problem of shifting into gears. This indicates that your clutch is just...

    Backspacing question

I'd say stay with a 7 inch wheel for several reasons with stock back spacing. First off, if you go with a 30x9.50 or a 31x10.50 tire you'll get better protection for your wheels as the tire will extend beyond the wheel on a 7" wheel. Also, with 7" wheel you'll get a slightly "high profile"...

    Backspacing question

Lay the wheel face down on the ground, take a straight edge that will go across the wheel (edge to edge), measure down to the face at the center where the lug holes are and get your measurement in inches... That's your back spacing... Ivan
