5.0 awd transfer case
I see, I'm the new guy falling into the stupid trap. OK thanks for that heads up. I just can't stand E thug know it all's spouting nonsense and untruths with no real world experience to back anything they say up. That is some great mileage. With the AWD and the front D shaft off I...- SWIGIN

5.0 awd transfer case
Ok, I was done with this thread but this has got to stop, to say I have no clue on this matter is BS. Did it ever occur to you that there are 2 different 4406 T cases....guess not. One with a clutch and one ( mine) without. How do I know 100% with out a doubt mine has none......I...- SWIGIN

My 98 XLT 5.0 Finally Goes Under The Knife
You are right but with the tank out and the exhaust out of the way the 4406 just fell into place once the floor was clearanced. I had it up in place 4 or 5 times, not bad to do but the tank needs to out of the way to make it easy. With the exhaust out of the way even the ******* bolt was as...- SWIGIN

I don't know anything about clutches in a 4X4 TC, None I have ever owned had clutches. My 4406 and my NP205 are direct chain and gear driven. And I don't care about whatever proof you need to see. I know what I have seen in the last 18 years. Have a great day,- SWIGIN

VSS woes
I don't think so guys. I just pulled my 98 T case and it had no wires or plugs on it. Here it is next to a 4406 that does have a VSS in the tail but I don't need it for my speedo to work.- SWIGIN

My 98 XLT 5.0 Finally Goes Under The Knife
Like the title says, my bone stock 98 is finally in the garage for what I'm calling phase one...lol Phase one is mainly just a 4406 swap and some preventative maintenance while I'm under there. Other then the 4406 swap I am installing a new fuel pump and sock in the tank since it will be coming...- SWIGIN

5.0 awd transfer case
The difference is when the hubs are locked in the front end the parts are not under any power. They are just being rotated by the wheels. The second 1.5 to 2 MOG loss is from the T case being locked into 4WD and power is being sent forward. This is very simple stuff guys and just facts that...- SWIGIN

5.0 awd transfer case
I'm not saying the MPG improvement will be huge and you never heard me say I'll feel the HP difference between the two. The facts are that if 100% of the motors power is going straight back to the rear with a 4406 and therefore without splitting or stealing some of that power and redirecting...- SWIGIN

The 4406 is only driving the front driveshaft when you have it in 4hi or 4lo. In 2hi or 2wd (however it is spelled out) 100% of the available power is sent straight through to the rear driveshaft. To stop the front D shaft and axles from turning you need to have hubs that unlock.- SWIGIN

5.0 awd transfer case
My Uncle who has been a mechanic for like 40 years told me the AWD units are roughly $700 to fix. For $100 I got a BW4406 and both drive shafts needed for the swap.....no brainer.- SWIGIN

4R70W Rebuild kits, and possible upgrades?
I'm a huge fan of these trannys and have upgraded the AOD-E in my Mustang to all 4R70W internals and have learned a few things. My favorite shift kit for these trannys is the Trannsgo H2 kit. It gives you maybe 5 or 6 new valves for the valve body and is FAR superior than just doing the J...- SWIGIN

Upgraded radiator for 2000 Explorer?
The radiators with plastic tanks are most likely stock replacements and just as that sounds your came from the factory with plastic tanks. I don't mind plastic tanks at all and most will last 100,000 miles or more.- SWIGIN

Poly Tranny mount for 5.0
I have a 94 Mustang GT with an AODE tranny and it's mount look a lot like an Explorer 5.0 mount but the EX mount looks shorter in height. I was wondering if anyone has looked into using a earlier Mustang mount like 65-73? It looks the same but is shorter then my 94. I can't find any...- SWIGIN

Heated Mirrors On The XLT?
I looked into this for my 98 XLT and if you look at the plugs, the factory mirror has 5 pins in the plug and so does the other half of the plug in the door. The heated mirrors have 7 or 8 pins in the plug so unless you have 7 or 8 wires or pins in the door plug it wont work.- SWIGIN

Two Questions: Seafoam misfire? And what the heck are the names of these hoses?!?
Those rear heater hoses look like they can be replaced with normal straight hose since the bends are mild. It's not like the pre bent molded bypass hose up at the water pump.- SWIGIN

Having 5.0 Engine Removed - Suggestions?
I wouldn't call that a rebuild, more like a refresh or freshening it. But I agree that that is all I would probably do to it depending what I see when I open up the motor.- SWIGIN

Junk yard finds for my EX.
My brother (who owns a Toyota junk yard) is a major junk yard junky. He told me he knows where to go to find the BW 4406 and related parts. Well he was right and we found several 4406s with linkage and shifters. image to url The 4406 and front drive shaft came out of a 97 F150 the rear D shaft...- SWIGIN

I just wanted to say that you did a great job and I can't wait to see the bumpers you come up with! I'm getting my brothers 98 EX XLT 5.0 in a couple of months and planed on doing a rear axle flip, narrow HP Dana44, and BW 4406 and this thread has been a great help in seeing what it all...- SWIGIN

New member, old gearhead
Hi guys, I'm an older gearhead looking for info on what I can do to my 98 Explorer XLT AWD. It will be a daily driver but I won't leave it stock and I'll be looking for SAS and rear axle flip threads for starters. I also want to do a BW4406 swap and will be getting the parts for that as soon...- SWIGIN
