1998 Explorer electrical issue: windows, wipers, interior lights stop working when car is running

From what I see on a wiring diagram, door locks and windows are going through the Accessory Delay Relay but interior lights don't, only through the Battery Saver Relay, or interior lamp relay. If both the windows and interior lamps start to work after a single relay clicks, then it is most...

1998 Explorer electrical issue: windows, wipers, interior lights stop working when car is running

^ Okay but if it consistently works with key in run but not engine running, wouldn't that be a heck of a coincidence if a relay, circuit board, or connection fault? I suppose it's possible that the vibration of the engine running is causing that sort of fault.

Once disabled, does it stay off or do you have to disable every time you start the vehicle?

1998 Explorer electrical issue: windows, wipers, interior lights stop working when car is running

^ Agreed, but, why would the GEM work when ignition switch is in run position, but not after starting it? After further consideration, all I can come up with is that these things are supposed to have power cut while cranking the engine, so electrically that cut out is still active after doing...

1998 Explorer electrical issue: windows, wipers, interior lights stop working when car is running

Seems pretty strange, no ideas except if you have high resistance somewhere like at the power distribution box under the hood, and possibly in conjunction with a weak alternator and battery, so running the vehicle is dropping the system voltage too low. There are 2nd gen wiring diagrams linked...

    Serpentine belt issue

I'd guess that you need a new power steering pump, was the problem all along, though in addition to checking play on the rest, I'd do a visual confirmation that all pulleys are aligned on the same plane, that none are offset from the rest, and that the belt tension is good. Did you compare the...

2023 Ford Explorer Timberline New Front Struts

Drive slower? ;) I agree with Peter, that if you didn't notice (handling degradation), you have a while still. I assume one or more struts were leaking? Front or rear parts? Were you hauling loads or towing?

    highbeam problems

Ahem, seeing a line where the light cuts off, that is above road level, is not evidence that the majority of the light isn't being cast at road level. Is your rear end suspension sagging? Has it been in a collision that altered the position of the headlamp assemblies? If not, odds are your...

    OBD advise for MY 97-2004

You might want to check in Forscan's forum, but I don't think you can do module programming on '97 thru '04 with Forscan, and Forscan can't program a PCM/ECU aka "Tune" on anything, AFAIK. I could be wrong, here is some reading: https://forscan.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18751...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Fuse 9 (?) is relevant. The power flow is battery to power distribution box fuse 9 (? top left on diagram 42-1), through the ABS main relay when activated by the ABS control module, out pin 30 of the ABS main relay, to arrow "A", to arrow "A" on diagram page 42-2, then at the ABS pump relay...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Edit: I'll leave what I wrote below, but remember, as I mentioned in my next post #97, that the orange/yellow wire and pin #17 on the Control Module should be shorting to ground when the ignition is off and the ABS Main Relay is installed. Yes I do wonder if that wire is severed and the end...

Stock Radio And Stock amp in 2000 explorer limited

I assume you aren't the original owner? My best guess is the prior owner had their radio fail, and picked up one that was for a different sound system package, one that didn't have the sub, and that's why the pins are missing on the radio, though it is a bit surprising to me that they'd make...

    timing chain

No, very few go out as early as 100K mi. Usually, and this is not a guarantee, when you start to hear the timing chain rattle, you have a few thousand miles at least before it becomes catastrophic. That's not consolation to those who didn't have that long but being practical, with no timing...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

I don't know about the compatibility of your scan tool. That's a major snag in figuring out what is going on with the ABS. I do recall that once on my '98, I had pulled a fuse that supplied power to my (different pinout) ABS controller, which made the ABS light come on (but the ABS light had...

    Blinking red light

Agreed, a door latch or a frayed wire in the door hinge boot seems likely for the lights and radio, though I can't recall anyone having an auto-lights issue related to this... but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

In post #80 you pictured that you were getting 12V on pump relay socket contact 85 with ignition on. Now you are measuring 0.3 ohms between these two points, to control module # 17. I don't see how this is possible, to not have nearly 12V on control module #17 as reported previously, unless...

    Blinking red light

I might be wrong about this. I overlooked that you wrote that the red blinking light is in the dome. I was referring to a red blinking light on the dash, near the speedometer and other gauges.

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

No power through the diode, I think we can forget about the diode. The other wire is "A" on 42-2, which goes to "A" on 42-1, which goes through the main relay, which can only be energized with ignition on, AND with the ABS Control Module grounding the Main Relay coil to complete the circuit...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Okay now I see why the fuse blew. Pin 85 on the pump relay, feeds back to "A" on diagram 42-2, then to "A" on 42-1, to the main relay, and if the main relay is not energized, the power would go in to pin 30 on main relay, and out 87a to ground, with nothing limiting the current except the fuse...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Okay, so the right relay socket is the main relay, and the wire from pin 86 to abs control module pin 19 is intact. I would focus on the wiring I colored red in my prior post. Edit: I mean take a resistance reading between pump relay socket contact 85 and Control Module connector pin 17. If...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

It still looks like the right relay socket is more likely the main relay due to pin 87a. Those readings suggest to me that the main relay is being triggered on, because then 12V is making it to pump relay pin 85 with ignition on. With pump relay pin 85 at 12V but 12V not making it to ABS...

    Blinking red light

I'd still look in the owner's manual but to remove the mirror you probably only need a hex or torx driver to loosen the set screw that holds it firm against the puck thing that's glued to the windshield, then it slides up and off that, and the electrical connector just has a little tab that gets...

    Blinking red light

Edit: This info might be wrong: No, the blinking dash light has nothing to do with headlights, just the PATS security system. The sensor is either at the front edge of your dash, or it seems possibly for your model year, in a recess in the rearview mirror, on the back of it (frontward facing...

    Rear end slip

Welcome to the forum! Does the back end slide around when trying to drive straight on a flat road, or is there uneven road or turns involved? First let me ask, is this your first vehicle with a high rear center of gravity? That alone, makes these handle poorly relative to a car in slippery...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

One way to know which contact on the ABS Main Relay socket (and determine which socket is the ABS Main Relay socket) is #85 and which is #86, is measure for resistance between ABS controller pin 19 and both of them, with resistance being nearly zero between the ABS Main Relay socket #86 and ABS...

I had another idea that applied to a prior post, so I have quoted that here in bold.
  30. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

I don't think I have a diagram for your relay box so I don't know. You might try checking for continuity between the blue/pink wire and the other relay socket? Then again, if you had been hooking up 12V to the pump relay pin 85, that shouldn't have blown the fuse either, but hooking it up to...

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

I just noticed something else. On the picture of the relay sockets, on the one you put arrows on to indicate 85a and 85b, is there no center 87a contact present? I don't see one, but I do on the other relay socket to the right of that one. On the diagram, that 4WABS Main Relay has 87a...
  32. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

You lost me when you started calling the relay sockets 85A and 85B. There is relay contact 85, and 86. I thought you had already confirmed that socket contact 85 was not shorting to ground, so I do not understand why the fuse blew, unless there is more wrong with the wiring than just that...
  33. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Yes the picture I posted previously was the pinout for the relay, not socket.
  34. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

I don't have first hand experience dealing with your relay box, but I imagine that access inside the relay box is achievable with the right combo of small tools, though I'd prefer the plastic was warmed up so it isn't as brittle, and that "might' allow pulling the relay socket contact out, or at...
  35. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

While you could do a fused run to the battery, it seems like a more permanent solution would be to just run a wire from main relay socket pin 85 (or the blue/pink wire section that you have pictured, if it has continuity to main relay socket pin 85), over to ABS control module pin 20, then you...
  36. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

If your meter probe or tap tip/needle is too large for your liking, for testing purposes I'd just grab a small sewing needle and poke it in with a pair of pliers. Steel isn't a particularly good conductor but good enough to check continuity to either end of the wire run.
  37. J

Would you assume my ABS control module is bad?

Then if the diagrams pictured in this topic are correct, you have a break in the wiring or fouled contact between fuse 14 output and main relay pin 85, which is keeping the ABS control module from switching the main relay on. In post #11 you stated "I get system voltage at 20, the "ignition...

1997 Explorer Ltd. V8 - ignition key? chip or not?

lol, yeah seems that way. If you have PATS and need a chipped key, there will be a "Theft" light blinking slowly on the dash at all times when the vehicle is off (but of course, battery connected).

Okay, if pump relay pin 85 is not getting power with ignition on, but more importantly main relay 85 is not getting power with ignition on, then do as suggested in post #39
