Rack & Pinion Gear Failure 2016/17 Explorer
I don't know the first model year to adopt it but the Tahoe switched to electric steering too. Year after year you have fewer options except to buy older and older vehicles. What is going to happen is the same as when any new(ish) tech was employed, that it takes a few years to improve the...- J_C

Rack & Pinion Gear Failure 2016/17 Explorer
It seems like the repair cost might drop before long. I just checked rock auto and they want approx $700 (depending on part #) delivered for new Motorcraft electric racks, plus a $400 core charge. If they value the core at $400 then they must be planning on someone rebuilding them. However I...- J_C

99 5.0 Misfires when warmed up
I'd look around for vac leaks, something static might cause misfires and lean code once the engine gets warm and tries to optimize the mix ratio.- J_C

stuttering / almost stalling at idle
Use a multimeter to measure your (charging system) battery voltage with the engine idling. It should be around 14.4V. Measure your battery voltage with everything off, should be around 12.6V [or least over 12.0V]. As far as the check engine light, use an OBDII code scanner and pull the codes...- J_C

Rack & Pinion Gear Failure 2016/17 Explorer
^ They are using electric steering to eek out a little better fuel economy, thanks to EPA and consumer demands. It's only going to get worse, higher vehicle complexity and higher repair costs. It's even worse for the DIYer who might have repaired a simpler system themselves because when all...- J_C

^ Similar could be said about any vehicle or even any non-vehicle environment, if one wants to be paranoid. However I do find it odd that you'd refer to 3rd row seating? You don't suppose children sit 2nd row in a 5th gen explorer or any other vehicle? Or did you think CO could somehow find...- J_C

9k for a 96?
It looks like what they did is take the spare tire Wrangler RT/S and rotate it onto the vehicle (while it hadn't been in regular rotation previously which is why it isn't worn out yet) then buy 3, Wrangler non-RT/S so that 4th mismatched tire is 10+ years old... just a guess. 1997 5.0 awd eddie bauer adding 17 inch rims
Bigger width, diameter, or necessarily both? 265/55R17 is a slightly smaller diameter but wider. If you want larger diameter then I'd try a 265/65R17, though your actual speed will be ~ 6% higher than the speedo indicates, but you gain almost an inch of ground clearance and fill the wheel wells...- J_C

Timingchain tensioners and gaskets- Airleak!
I had erratic idling when my IAC got too dirty. It would especially do it when the AC compressor cycled on. It is unlikely that you would get a smell and white vapor from a vac leak, so I would think it's coolant IF it only happens when the engine is hot, and of course your coolant level is...- J_C

^ Which is not a reason for Ford to contact 1.3m owners. Two '01 Sport Rear Brake Questions
You'd need to take the wheels off and check the remaining material. Belt Squeal
Could be oil, could be worn belt, but check the belt tension. If you only replaced the tensioner pulley and not the whole thing then you might have too much slack. Able to Use Factory Sub Wiring?
500W doesn't seem like much (and many are questionably over-rated) but in terms of 12V current that could still be enough to make lower gauge power wire useful. Plus, it may be too much current for the fuse on that circuit so you need a separate fused circuit anyway. I'm seeing a 25A fuse on...- J_C

Exhaust leaks, Ford Explorers and the environment.
You're stretching it a bit when you state that the # of complaints have nothing to do with the problem, but I suspect it's even the opposite of what you're implying. Fewer vehicles have had CO detected than the # of complaints. That's far more relevant data than samples with no complaints...- J_C

2001 ford explorer sport RWD engine swap help
No, it would have an additional balance shaft but that's not a problem AFAIK. What would be changed is swap everything over from the old engine that isn't the same as on the new, except being the same engine and year, practically everything is going to be the same.- J_C

Exhaust leaks, Ford Explorers and the environment.

I don't have the factory amp but do have a reasonable knowledge of audio electronics. You'd want to look at the power wire gauge to determine if it's enough to support the wattage of your new amp. The amp user/installation manual should mention that. This includes the ground wire, if the...- J_C

Depends on how well it was taken care of. Someone who replaced rusted out rocker panels is a level above the average owner. Bluebook evaluation means very little once a vehicle gets past ~ 15 y/o. Lets make it higher now
Taking what you wrote literally, you just need a TT and 2" shackles then put 31" tires on to get 3". My point is, why raise it if not going to larger tires and if you are, 3" lift plus (over 2" more than stock) tires is no longer only 3" higher for the purposes of a child trying to get in.- J_C

IIRC they didn't offer the V6 SOHC engine till '97, so I would still consider the V6 OHV engine IF everything else was good enough to offset that, or of course the V8. Po174 code
Bad injector will tend to cause just one cylinder misfire instead of that code. Testing Ford Explorers and their drivers for Carbon Monoxide
There are many CO detectors that sense down to 11ppm. It seems likely that the same sensor is used in many different makes and models, costing anywhere from $25 and up on sale. Speaking about levels and alarms, the OSHA standard appears to be 35ppm so you could literally be getting more CO...- J_C
