Got some more done today. No pics right now. I changed the passenger side ball joint and control arm bushings. Re sealed and installed the oil cooler assembly. New outer tie rods. Reinstalled the power steering hoses to the rack. Installed spark plugs, My buddy loomed all the plug wires together...

This truck does have the oil cooler from the factory. Working on finding some replacement O rings for that thing. No signs of internal leakage at this time.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Now I'm trying to figure out the order of operations for all the little stuff. Thinking of all the things that are easier while the engine is up. Upper control arms? Spark plugs and wires. I bought motor mounts but the ones on there don't look bad. But I'll probably take them off for a close up...

I'm with you. I'm gonna keep looking for another 5.0 EX. We will see how it goes. I run my own auto repair business. The upkeep is no problem. That's why I haven't gotten shy with this one.

Ya know, that really is a good idea. Just wrap the hood!! The sides definitely will buff out nicely. Thanks! Really been so concentrated on mechanical and cleanliness that I wasn't thinking about a the exterior. Great idea. Not too expensive either.

Hahaha. I thought about it. But I did run the truck before I started all this and despite the lack of maintenance it ran pretty good.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Everything is ready to reassemble. When I opened the timing chain, it was more used than the one I took off the EX. Little auto parts internal switcheroo. So as soon as I get the parts together reassemble it all. Be back together tomorrow.

Problem here in Vegas is that 9 out of 10 EXs have the same paint burning. And come to think of it, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a second gen EX in this grey. Interesting point.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

Good points. This EX will be a street vehicle. Just pavement and idiot drivers here...We'll see what she wants to do.

    1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

All good points. I was on the fence a day ago about whether or not to do the water pump and timing chain. Now I'm glad that I did. In fact there was one broken long bolt. the head was broken off before I got there. Another long bolt wasn't even screwed in all the way. Had 1/2" between the bolt...
