I would chase all of the threads on that timing cover
You are supposed to use thread sealant on the threads of the 4 long bolts that go into the water jacket
I usually drain the oil and leave the plug out while I do the timing cover

I coated all of mine with anti-seize. The reason they seize up in the holes is due to the corrosion of the aluminum along the bolt shanks, over many many years. The air in there provides the moisture needed to create the corrosion. It isn't from coolant reaching the bolts, those holes are blind, or should be.

Just like the heater hose pipes along the intake, those are supposed to have threads to screw into the intake manifold. But some versions have push on connections and three o-rings, I've never seen that on a 302 myself.

I’m pulling the oil pan today. I’ll put the chain and timing cover on before I put the pan back on.

And for sure I'll be chasing those threads! And using anti seize!

as far as paint and wrap, maybe you should ask @410Fortune about Montsaliner.
Was gonna have mine resprayed, but his, and other's endorsements have changed that.
Now just keeping her shiny, and appreciating the 2 spots on the bed that are thinning, and calling it patina.

I love my lined vehicles :) no more paint worries, maintenance, Monstaliner holds up!
But then my trucks are covered in nature on any given day and we constantly have alder branches reaching into our road...........

you should see the HUGE scratch my wife put down the pass side of our 01 Excursion.......the branch was rubbing so bad it marked up the rubber window trim too....she just kept driving. That old black paint is ready to be re done. Monstaliner the excursion? What a huge job!!!

That is why our daily drivers back here are coated..... Monstaliner the $400 paint job that lasts and lasts... no scratches on my truck!! it just rubs off
It is not for everyone, but it is a good alternative to a wrap.
It is also considered permanent, unlike the wrap

I plan to monstaliner my 4 door OBS F350 next....in white!
The excursion, will have to wait a few more seasons

Good points. This EX will be a street vehicle. Just pavement and idiot drivers here...We'll see what she wants to do.

Find a hood with same paint at junkyard...the rest of paint is pretty good....that grey though isn't mainstream on second gens.

Thinking my wife has a sister she doesn't know about......

Problem here in Vegas is that 9 out of 10 EXs have the same paint burning. And come to think of it, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a second gen EX in this grey. Interesting point.

are you tempted to pop a cap and gander @ a bearing?

Everything is ready to reassemble. When I opened the timing chain, it was more used than the one I took off the EX. Little auto parts internal switcheroo. So as soon as I get the parts together reassemble it all. Be back together tomorrow.

Hahaha. I thought about it. But I did run the truck before I started all this and despite the lack of maintenance it ran pretty good.

Someone returned a timing chain, and it got reshelved w/o looking @ it?

Either that or an employee swapped it.
I worked in a parts store/ machine shop in college, never occurred to me. Not that I would have done it, just disappointed my devious mind didn't go there. 😈

Never really occurred to me either. I never wanted the trouble involved with stealing stuff.

Just wrap the hood!
It took me like 10 years of searching but on my old 96 I had bought wrecked, eventually I found a 96 at a wrecker w same exact paint code so I bought the entire front clip. The nice part was the fenders and hood donor was a rwd, and my 4406 was 4wd not awd, so I lost the awd badges.

almost a perfect match
I had green mountaineer fenders for years and then eventually primer before I found good factory body parts

I miss that old 96
gen II's 5.0 are TANKS
