@DemonMudder Don't worry, Danny and I will show you around this place. Eldorado Outpost is the best spot for passes, and they have good trail maps too (I'd recommend grabbing a spare or two, in case somebody needs one or loses theirs). Walk in the door, ask cashier for passes for # of days...

    Flat tow package value

RIP, but my Explorer was totaled long before I got it, and here it is, still kickin' around at 25 years old. If she's ugly but she still runs fine, I'd be tempted to keep her... but that's just me. Explorers aren't too hard to find, so if you keep your eyes sharp, you might just find an other...

    5.0 2to4wd 4406 and tons

5.38, with 40's? Isn't that a bit tall? Unless you intend to keep it daily-driveable or highway-worthy, I'd recommend going closer to 6... but I like tractor torque. I'm running 5.13's with 33's. And my guy, that rig of yours is a beaut!

    Uwharrie 2024

Ladies and gentlemen, the date is set. Monday 9/2 through Wednesday 9/4 is when the big event goes down. My vacation time has been requested. @DemonMudder and all others who know the game, put in your requests now, before every one else does!

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

@97Sandbox I stopped to get some thing out of the road that fell of somebody's truck the other day, and I actually started blowing away. Had to get down on two feet and a hand a few times in order to keep moving towards it. Gave me a healthy respect for weather reporters...

Getting the most out of what I have

She do be looking pretty, my guy! Nice K&N intake, I have the same one on my Sport. How much coolant you need in that reservoir, is that just up to the cold fill line? The line on both of my SOHC coolant reservoirs is below the ridge. Not sure they're all the same, my two look different...

    2020 Platinum

I have a 1st-gen Dodge Durango that does this, but has no sun roof. If your Explorer has a roof rack, consider checking the mounting screws for signs of water intrusion.

    Uwharrie 2024

Well, I'm going to narrow this down to either the 1st week in September (2-4) or the third week (16-18) due to the projected occurrence of a meeting on the second week. If they reschedule that meeting, too bad for them. 9/2 is Labor Day, anybody have thoughts for it? A lot of people have...

    Hi

@jkping Welcome to the forum! I'm sure you'll find plenty of useful (and entertaining!) information here for your Explorer! 2016 is a 5th-gen; there's a dedicated forum for each generation, as you may know. How many miles? What engine? What trim line and color? Care to share pics? We here...

My New Ride (97) & SOHC Question

@joney What J_C said - these may have been errantly called recalls. I'm aware of a cruise control TSB and a timing chain TSB on the 2nd-gens, but was not aware of any recalls on 2nd-gen Explorers. I simply called my local Ford dealership and just asked them if they knew if any TSB's had been...

Change Wires when Changing Plugs? Broke Wires Again.

@C420sailor Agreed, they're cheap enough (less than $150) and every 100k, you're robbing yourself of the car's best performance by not doing them together.

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

For what it's worth, my '99 Sport has a metal tank (17 gal). I'd have to look under my '00 Limited (21 gal) and see if it's metal or plastic, always assumed it was metal (has the skid plate).

    410Custom's builds a 2007 Ranger V8 - custom truck build - Project "Ranger Premier"

@410Fortune This has been one of the best-documented and most interesting project threads on this forum, and we're honored to have you share it with us! 51 years... happy (late) birth day! I'm on the better half of that myself now, and I hope when I'm your age, I'm 1/10 as awesome as you are...

    Howdy

@GRWeldon Welcome to this forum! There's a lot of information about that transmission here. I'm sure you'll find every thing you need in the 2nd-generation forums. Hope you enjoy your time with this community!

    De-Bauering the Explorer

If you wanted to, you could always repaint the flares black or gray or some such. There is something special about the body lines without the flares, though.

    Uwharrie 2024

@DemonMudder There are some obstacles none of us are going to risk our rigs over, so nobody's going to get called chicken for taking a few side cuts. Most of the tough obstacles have established bypasses so lighter-equipped vehicles can still get through without issue. Many of the trails are...

My New Ride (97) & SOHC Question

Now that truck is a beauty indeed! As 410Fortune said, it's all in the maintenance. No repair can be substituted for proper maintenance. These trucks were well-designed and built to last. Just keep the oil changed! And never flush the transmissions! The SOHC death rattle comes from the...

Change Wires when Changing Plugs? Broke Wires Again.

Motorcraft or NGK. Running NGK plugs and wires on my '03 Dodge woke it back up, so I'd trust them if you can't get Motorcraft.

    De-Bauering the Explorer

I liked it before... but I've always liked 'em extra wide. Jokes aside, the body lines without the trim actually aged well, specifically the pre-'99s with the flat hatches. Nice tow hooks. Can't bother a guy to ask where you got them from, can I?

    Uwharrie 2024

@DemonMudder Monday-Wednesday it is, then! Just gotta decide on which week, for which we might want to wait a bit and see if this garners any more attention before we slap a date on it that we might have to change later. I'll give it a week or two and see what happens. "Rowdy" may be a bit...

Getting the most out of what I have

I see, I see. Well, I hope things turn out in your favor - it might end up being cheaper/easier to make your own, once shipping is factored in, but you might just get lucky!

Just picked up a 94 Eddie Bauer.

She's a beaut! Welcome to this forum, I like to think of this place as our collective backyard.

@DemonMudder Week days it is, partner! In our walks of life, week ends are not worth the fights it takes to get them. @DannyW I really don't want to push it into October, but could if we have to. It's preferable to use my vacation time early-ish in the year, because everybody else is fighting...

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

Yeah, don't smoke while you're doing it! Jokes aside, just use common sense and safety precautions. You'll want to wipe around where the openings will be, BEFORE removing the fuel pump, so no dirt or particles will fall into the fuel tank.

Getting the most out of what I have

I don't suppose you could cut/burn/tear/otherwise mangle the material off and re-use the same sleeves? May be I'm un-thrifty, but if I was actually so concerned as to go to the extent of replacing those bushings, I don't think an extra $50 would bother me too much.
  27. D

    Uwharrie 2024

All right, so far we're squaring up to some time between late August and early October. I don't want to push it too late into the year, but I understand that you fellas aren't down for that NC heat again. It's a lot easier for me to get time off during the week than it is to get a week end...

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

Bosch has a good reputation, from what I understand. Just fuel pump vs. entire assembly, my recommendation would depend on the price. If the entire assembly is cheap and available, you might as well go for the gold.

    Uwharrie 2024

@DemonMudder @DannyW Any interest this time around? If so, feel free to ping anybody else you know might be interested... worst case scenario, they can make it next year. Like last year, family, friends, and more rigs are welcome as well!

    Uwharrie 2024

Well, folks, warmer weather is approaching, and I'm planning my third annual trip to Uwharrie on September 2-4. If anybody is interested, post here and I'll add you to the list of participants. My plan is to arrive on Monday afternoon (Labor Day), hit a few easy trails before sundown, ride all...

Getting the most out of what I have

@toobladink What Fix4Dirt and 410Fortune said. They're right. When I did the rear shackles and shock absorbers on both of my Explorers, I didn't even bother to put the front end off the ground. Pick up the rear frame way farther than you think you need space for, because as 410Fortune said...

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

Those auto lights are the bane of many; unplugging the rear-view mirror wire is the favored option, although I personally find the auto-timeout useful (the inability to turn them off in the drive-through doesn't make me any friends). Ironically, I also just got a new battery for my '00 Limited...

Lean codes and a mystery O2

Post #34 and downward. https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/getting-the-most-out-of-what-i-have.503786/page-2#post-4018543 Besides the fuel pump, you might consider cleaning/replacing the injectors. I've got two 2nd-gens, one around 225k and one just hit 195k, and have seen and heard...

    410Custom's builds a 2007 Ranger V8 - custom truck build - Project "Ranger Premier"

I too have noticed the "Like" button conspicuously missing from this (and several other) threads. I don't know if it's that some accounts are blocked from "Liking" some threads, or what. It doesn't seem to be any thing related to browser settings or the page loading wrong - the threads without...

    Project Vulture

@Rick Thanks! I believe that I've seen it. Somewhat more or less like this one, right? https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/threads/1998-and-up-weld-together-winch-bumper.471888/ That's an outstanding design, but I'm looking for more of a baja-style bumper, something lightweight, like Josh...

    Project Vulture

Well, it's been a long time coming, but after owning The Vulture for almost 7 years, her brakes are finally worn down enough to warrant replacement. Power Stop K1855-36 is on the shopping list, just waiting for my tax return now. Also somewhere in the endgame plan is a steel front bumper. The...

Getting the most out of what I have

@toobladink I had both of those codes (P0171 and P0174) occur on a few occasions on my '99 SOHC. The first time, both codes appeared during the cold part of winter (around 15 F, here) and stayed once it warmed up, so I replaced the O2 sensor. In my case, I could easily identify that the O2...

1999 Mounty 5.0 aka My Great Bad Idea

@97Sandbox RideTrendZ (AKA RTZ) makes a kit for these which includes new T-bar keys and shackles. I've got this on both my '99 Sport and my '00 Limited, the Sport having been off-roaded and epically abused, including rocks and air time, and haven't had the slightest of issues. It'll pick it up...
