410Custom's builds a 2007 Ranger V8 - custom truck build - Project "Ranger Premier"
@410Fortune Congratulations, in advance! Enjoy your retirement - even though we all know, "retirement" just means we get to move on to a different kind of work! At last, the work you chose, and not the work somebody else gave you.- DintDobbs

Toggle Airbags for off road?
Easiest and fastest way to disable the air bags is to go under the front seats and unplug the little yellow connectors - there is one underneath the driver's seat, and one underneath the front passenger seat. That will cause the air bag light to come on the dash, indicating that the air bags...- DintDobbs

Towing with a 2000 Explorer XLT
That's well within the tow capacity of these Explorers. If you have an automatic transmission though, you should always turn Overdrive OFF when towing, particularly if you have the SOHC/5R55E combination. Make sure your brakes are still in good condition after you've towed with it a few times...- DintDobbs

Getting the most out of what I have
@toobladink Nice going! I'm due for brakes on my Sport next year (or this year, if they don't pass inspection) and came across the Powerstop kit a few years back when planning for just this occasion. If you don't mind, I (and countless others, I'm sure) would appreciate any and all commentary...- DintDobbs

Rear Diff Rebuild Parts
@C420sailor That rhythmic metallic sound while turning is a sound I'm familiar with. I just replaced the parking brake assemblies on both sides of my 2000 Limited, and recently that exact sound which you described started occurring, as well as a small but noticeable change in the feel while...- DintDobbs

Just bought a 98, now fixing it up
@Running an Explorer More likely just that I haven't seen any gold with the pin stripe. There's plenty of gold ones around my area (including a lifted one on what appears to be 35's) but none of them have the pin stripe. The guard rail stripe... nobody needs to worry about that.- DintDobbs

11 month old rebuilt starter died: Considering just going brand new this time, worth it?
Starters do blow up with no warning, can confirm. It would spin, but it wouldn't grab, after starting fine for 19 years and 170k-ish miles. I didn't have much trouble changing the starter on the SOHC, just using common tools. Didn't even need to take it off the ground (was skinnier then!)...- DintDobbs

Back Hatch Window Shattered - New Subwoofer
Yeah, I'm gonna say the glass must have been already weakened or even cracked in order to do that. I used to run a pair of 12" Kicker L7's (square) on 2000 watts, and while that isn't anywhere close to the speaker's limits, the entire vehicle and its surroundings would often vibrate. That never...- DintDobbs

Old parts, new parts, same issue. Assuming the engine is COLD when I begin: I fill the coolant reservoir and it stays full, for a day, for a week, for ever, unless the engine has been warmed up and cooled down. 11 month old rebuilt starter died: Considering just going brand new this time, worth it?
Honesty is the best policy. Why lie when you could keep the spare starter? If it's not the rebuilt one that is the problem, but some thing else (however unlikely) ate the first one both times, you could find yourself needing it down the line any way. Besides that... rebuilding a starter never...- DintDobbs

2021 Explorer base model ... can I adjust the driver's seat this way?
@ThreeFords Have you considered upgrading to a seat from a higher-end model? I don't know about the compatibility between the different models in that generation, but it seems that given your nerve situation, it might be worth the expenditure IF it is possible. I wouldn't advise using a...- DintDobbs

@Running an Explorer Odd, about the ants. Three of the vehicles my household has possessed over the years have had small numbers of ants inside at various times. Missing CEL is an easy fix. -Deathrow Update Log-
@DemonMudder Found the receipt, it's called the K&N 57 Series FIPK, part number 57-2528. Apparently they still make 'em, or at least there are still plenty of them around. @DemonMudder There used to exist a K&N high-flow intake kit; if you modify (read: cut up) the stock intake box, you can fit the K&N setup in there. Not sure how much it improves flow, but the filter area is huuuge. I've got one on my Sport.- DintDobbs

Can it be fixed?
I'm with @Josh P... I want to see a bigger area so we can get an idea of how big and how bad this spot is. Generally you can either have new sheet metal bent to fit, or you can cut a piece out of a donor Explorer to weld in (cheaper but riskier; these could have rust). Reminding me that I've...- DintDobbs

Getting the most out of what I have
Replace things one at a time. Shocks are easy backyard stuff, nab some RS5000X's (I have part numbers if you want 'em) and see how they feel before deciding to replace springs. Welp, the leak does appear to be on the thermostat housing. No build-up, but it looks like there's coolant on the outside after leaving it parked all night. I lost the number, but according to my research the Dorman 604-217 is the part you're after. This is specifically for the EATC-equipped models, and will set you back somewhere in the scope of $40-60. @Provis Now this was an awesome find. Keep an eyeball on that rear main seal, my '99 (SOHC) just finally started leaking this year. This is more of an age thing than a wear thing. @Vademastwe This thread is from 2015, so it might not get attention from the original poster. I forget his name, but one user put a 2nd-gen front end on a 1st-gen. The other way around should be possible too. A bit of searching around might yield the results you're looking for.- DintDobbs

If you've already tried an other known good coil pack, then that definitely checks that off the list... Could well be the PCM. That wouldn't be fun.
