New member deciding on 2018 Explorer or waiting on 2019
Not that I'm biased, but I still feel the 2017 MY is the sweet spot of tech and style. I prefer the look of the 2017 over the slightly muted 2018 (foglights). Although quad pipes on the Sport/Platinum are a definite plus if you go that route. I wouldn't go earlier than 2017 because Sync 3.- kmarnes

Should I buy an Explorer Sport?
OP was asking about getting a 16-17, which is a very different question. Everyone is going to be different -- price range, newness, driving habits, etc. All that needs to be considered. I'm super happy having bought my 17 Sport new and it's been problem free for 1.5 years now. But I also got a...- kmarnes

Touren TR19 wheels. This is my winter setup with 18" (the stock 20s are for the summer). Although they come in all sizes. I like that the lugs are behind a cover.- kmarnes

Hi everyone! How to get best price on new Explorer?
If you wait until Ford Employee Pricing with Costco discount, you should be pretty close to the bottom limit (haggle free). Just watch for add-ons like security features like wheel locks, tagging etc. Don't pay for any extras like that. The FEP deals happen twice a year.- kmarnes

Snow Driving
For the mostpart, SoCal's don't need winter tires, unless you go way up north or towards Big Bear. Hard to justify the cost for potentially a handful of times. The stock tires are absolutely terrible in real snow conditions, and combined with such a heavy car, you'll just keep sliding should you...- kmarnes

2019 Explorer Platinum vs 2019 Ford Edge ST
I'm largely on the same page with you (my experience is solely with the 2017 Explorer Sport). It's taken some getting used to, as its very easy to bog down acceleration by punching it while already moving. I think it's a combination of 6-speed, twin-turbo lag, and ECU programming. Ford really...- kmarnes

hill descent questions...
I do use the paddle shifters, but it's a pretty high maintenance process when factoring in traffic, windy sections, and changing grades. I do that so I don't overheat the brakes.- kmarnes

Camera Washer Not Working
I haven't had any problems with mine -- front or rear. Including a bunch of ski trips with lots of challenging gunk. Given that you are in Toronto (with freezing winters and road salt), just want to rule out the possibility you didn't skimp out on a good washer fluid. Like say putting in plain...- kmarnes

hill descent questions...
I didn't exactly buy an Explorer for this feature, but I also was a little disappointed I couldn't use it for a typical mountain descent, like say after skiing at a local hill. It becomes a game of brakes, and gears. A hill descent feature that supports a medium speed would be nice.- kmarnes

2019 Explorer Platinum vs 2019 Ford Edge ST
You'll have to consider that Chrysler/Dodge are bottom of the barrel for reliability and depreciation. Fords are kind of in the middle, though I've had zero problems with my new Explorer which I've owned for 1.5 years now. If you want to go soul-destroying minivan, then you should consider the...- kmarnes

2019 Explorer Platinum vs 2019 Ford Edge ST
I considered the Edge when I bought the Explorer. In the end, a loaded Edge was nearly as expensive as a loaded Explorer, and I didn't see the value. But then again, I was happy to have a larger SUV anyways. The Explorer also won out in looks by a long shot. The way I see an Edge is kind of like...- kmarnes

Hard wiring dash cam in a 2017 XLT question
Wow, that's about the dumbest thing I ever heard. Windshield obstruction? Mine's installed between the rear-view mirror and the windshield. I can't even see it when I'm driving. Prices paid for 2017 & 2018 Explorer in Canada
Canadian prices are very favorable after factoring in exchange rate and taxes. It definitely varies by manufacturer. But Ford is good to Canada. I paid the equivalent of $43,000 USD for a new Sport (add a couple k for the equivalent platinum). That was before taxes and fees and a $1000 rebate...- kmarnes

2016 Explorer LED Fog Lights option??
We've had a lot of winter/rainy weather lately and I find the foglights are quite useful for seeing pedestrians. The headlights themselves are pretty weak overall, so I find the foglights supplement them .- kmarnes

2020 Explorer
Wow, that is a different direction indeed. 3.0 twin turbo with 400hp & 400ft/lb is quite decent (+10%) but rear wheel drive with the 10 speed transmission. I wonder if it's because it's losing all the AWD mass and gaining fuel economy. Definitely a tradeoff. That said, these cars *should* be...- kmarnes

Prices paid for 2017 & 2018 Explorer in Canada
I think the best deal you'll get is a hair over $55k for a Platinum (with no options -- granted it's already fully loaded, and options are really just limited to paint and bucket seats). That was with Ford Employee pricing and Costco rebate (though the rebate is applied after tax, so that would...- kmarnes

towing package myths ??
+1 on this and other comments. I'm sure you can tow 5000 pounds just fine... for awhile, depending on conditions. 2017 Max Defrost button doesn't seem to do what I want it to do...
Alright, so I paid extra special attention to everything this morning. It was 2C, so no frost, but everything was fogged up. 2017 Max Defrost button doesn't seem to do what I want it to do...
It does say hi at the top of the sync screen, but I still get the same behavior. It might be by design though. My assumption is that it should blast max temperature at max fan speed and it's definitely not doing that.- kmarnes

2017 Max Defrost button doesn't seem to do what I want it to do...
The only time I really need to max defrost the car is first thing in the morning when I'm leaving for work. I start the car, press max defrost, then scrape the windows. Then I get into the car and find my windshield is still heavily fogged up. But paying closer attention, the act of switching...- kmarnes

In the morning, when there is frost on my windows... I hit the Max Defrost button and it's basically ignored. I normally keep it on Auto climate. Please recommend all weather tires!
Some people don't want two sets of tires. In some climates, winter tires are rarely if ever needed.
