Which is the best year
Truth be told, I bought a 2017 and thus my first ever new car, because I wouldn't settle with any other year. Every other car I've purchased in my life has generally been 2 years or more old when I bought it used, so that's special.- kmarnes

Which is the best year
I like the look of the 2016+ because it has more of a Land Rover look. But the 2017 has the sync 3 which is a massive upgrade for the usability/responsiveness of the infotainment/navigation. The upcoming 2018 has a new suite of tech/safety packages, and subtle aesthetic changes.- kmarnes

Almost Ready to Buy a 2017 Limited
Hah! I'm sure you'll figure it out. These first world problems can really add up! There is some merit to wanting a lighter interior color in hot weather climates, but alas seems headliner/dash is black in the Explorer no matter what. I'll never forget the time I drove my BMW with black leather...- kmarnes

2016 / 19 Explorer Roof Racks - Totally Different
Yep. One can't reasonably roof rack anything with just a 45lb weight limit. I had no problems at all with my potentially 120lb load. Was solid as a rock. Kayaks might be a different story. Depends on how they mount and how much clearance you have.- kmarnes

Just Ordered my 2017 Explorer Limited
Thanks, that's what I was afraid of (plus what Peter said). Something special about the Explorer that allows so much mess to accumulate on the back, which is more than any other vehicle I've driven. Not end of the world, only slightly annoying. I do go through more wash than ever -- use it...- kmarnes

Good luck with your purchase. I'm very happy with my Explorer. So whereabouts are you? I got mine during the Ford Employee Pricing event last August in Canada and got effectively 12% off MSRP with the deal including Costco discount. Figuring out the best deal will be your next step.- kmarnes

Ford Explorer 2013 Service Schedule
I paid $104 Canadian for my first synthetic oil change along with a full inspection, rotation, and a car wash at the Ford dealer I bought my car. I'll be doing this every six months. It's good value in my book and because I've got a extended warranty, everything is getting done at the dealer. If...- kmarnes

@fatboyO Do you find the splash guards help at all? In particular my Explorer is prone to getting the rear camera filthy in any sort of wet conditions just by normal driving. I always have to use the rear-washer to clean it before I can back up. In dry weather, it's fine. I did a mountain pass...- kmarnes

Well if it helps, Smoked quartz is a new color in 2017, therefore much more unique. Magnetic has been around for years and is very common. Smoked quartz is also darker... somewhere in the middle between magnetic and black. Here's a few pics of mine in real world conditions: Right after I put...- kmarnes

2016 Sport Transmission how to question?
Right, sorry, my bad. I poorly summarized this article: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/adventure/red-line/the-trouble-with-turbos-why-fuel-economy-can-be-worse-not-better/article29705614/, specifically this part: Knock is destructive (imagine millions of tiny grenades exploding...- kmarnes

2016 Sport Transmission how to question?
Yeah Napalm, what you say matches my experiences as well. Everything in this car is electronic settings -- sport vs regular mode, paddle shifting requests, even traction controls. In the end, everything you touch electronically feeds into the ECU and that determines how the car behaves. It is...- kmarnes

I'm a huge fan of the moonroof as well (opens up the interior -- I have a black interior). The adaptive cruise control I feel is must have, even though I only use that on road trips and do the vast majority of my driving in the city (over 95%). But that feature also comes with forward collision...- kmarnes

2016 Sport Transmission how to question?
From personal experience (Sport/Platinum only), I find if you punch the gas pedal too aggressively while already moving at a normal speed, the acceleration can be significantly delayed and jarring. An amount of subtlety when pressing down the gas pedal results in a better overall experience. To...- kmarnes

2016 / 19 Explorer Roof Racks - Totally Different
So to recap the thread, the new style is definitely designed to be more aero-dynamic and quiet than the older raised style. Just throwing this out there, but could it possibly be an alternator on it's way out? Sometimes when the battery is near death, it can put an undue strain on the alternator causing that to fail too.- kmarnes

Potential new owner......help me decide.
Having lived in England, your really going to have a hard time at the pump with an Explorer -- eats too much gas, and UK gas is so expensive! Plus isn't there some sort of gas tax based on the economy of your vehicle? Apparently the throttle body issues only affected the non Eco-boost engines...- kmarnes

Ordered Silver 2017 Explorer Platinum for my Wife
Interesting thread. Cool about the green stickers. I ended up buying mine off a lot instead of ordering one. Had 111km on it. Was fine with that. Car works and wasn't dinged, so good enough for me. For reference, here's a couple photos of it in the well vs over the stashed seats. It covers all but 18" of space. It's more versatile than you might expect and you don't need to take it out of the car when you are using the 3rd row.- kmarnes

I haven't seen this either (Sync3 , 2017 Sport), but I found a couple threads talking about some sort of Navigation based hazard warning setting. 2018 Explorer
Yeah, if the new autonomous emergency braking (AEB) has all the false positives of the current system, then it's going to be a problem. I'm sure there will be software settings to control sensitivity, etc. It might beep for a second or two and not actually brake until it deems it a big problem...- kmarnes

Floor mats/liners/cargo mats
I actually tried this at the dealer when I considered purchasing it because I had my doubts. Rolling it up basically converts it into a small carpet roll that is too wide to fit behind the 3rd row seats, and while I didn't try to fold it in half, my gut instinct told me that wasn't feasible at...- kmarnes

I bought the OEM ford 3rd row cargo protector and I highly recommend it. I'm sure there's a Husky equivalent too. It doesn't interfere with any seat fold/deploy/stashed position. Other than taking it into the dealer, you could check the panels, especially the one you pull out for the spare tire, and the two metal latches... make sure nothing is obscuring. 2016 Ford Explorer Sport TPMS Part#
Unclear. It's possible they might need an initial training. I had the dealer install them for me. Yeah for me, I wasn't even offered the Ford Warranty. I was offered the one that deals with Fords and Audis, etc... at the dealer, not sure why. Perhaps more margin? Also I'd add, not all warranties are equal. You tend to get what you pay for (within reason). Always good to shop around for the best price if you can. $1300 for 7 years/100K miles seems too good to be true, even in the states. Even with the warranty I got up here in Canada, there were several...- kmarnes

No, but I should be close to that. I'll cross that threshold today on my way home. I did fill air at a gas station -- all my tires were 31-32, and after I was finished they were all 35. I had one that was over, so I let air out, and it updated correctly on the correct tire. So that rules out...- kmarnes

I believe mine chimes when opening if I do it from the driver seat. If I do it from the back, I don't think it chimes. Maybe it chimes if I use the foot swipe. Haven't paid attention -- but it could be contextual chiming.- kmarnes
