Clunk in the front
Check to see that the ball joint is not "frozen" within it's socket. The stud should move about fairly easily. Seems unlikely the mounting hole in the A-arm would be wallowed out otherwise......imp.- imp

motor on transfer case
If the drive motor is shifting between 2H and 4L, it is probably working OK. There are contacts ( a switch, if you will) which are closed and opened as the motor moves the shifter through it's travel. Likely, those contacts are maladjusted, or bad, preventing the motor from stopping at 4H...- imp

Need help with buying a 1995 Explorer
In "4 AUTO" if you demand enough power on gravel to begin spinning rear wheels, the front drive should instantly engage, which you can detect in the vehicle (unless you have some one watching outside) as the rear wheels will cease spinning as power goes to front also, if you have only given...- imp

Used Plugs ?
You aren't really missing anything. It's just generally accepted nowadays that each part removed should go back where it was. Important consideration for things like pistons, valves, lifters, etc. Realistically, each cylinder experiences slightly varying conditions from the others, and...- imp

2002 Explorer engine turned off while driving
Checking my Ford Shop Wiring Manual, Section 23-1 "Engine Controls" clearly shows the PCM Power Diode feeding directly to the PCM Power Relay, which is located in the Battery Junction Box, as is also the Power Diode. How can Dealership trained technicians not be aware of the existence of the...- imp

Help! Alignment issues
So, to measure individual wheel toe, the opposite wheel must be in the straight-ahead position, in line with the axis of the vehicle, as long as both tie rod ends remain connected to the system. Considering this then allows setting the overall vehicle toe to the correct value, while keeping the...- imp

So, it's kinda like, if I shift a manual trans. without easing up on the gas pedal, by the time I engage the next gear, the engine sppeds up....eh? HTH does one know whether he's getting a flare, or the guts are allowing slipping? imp- imp

1996 Explorer-Auto Trans trouble
The problem I have with what you're saying, and I could be wrong, is this: the computer stored codes because it detected "faults" which should not have been there. Those faults might have been generated before or after the trans. rebuild, so, if they were generated after the rebuild, and...- imp

Help! Alignment issues
Gavin, not to be a "pick", but please set me straight. Unless the physics of front wheel steering has been changed, as long as the 2 wheels are mechanically tied together by the steering system, how can we speak of individual toe values for each wheel? IF the vehicle is set to move straight...- imp

2002 Explorer engine turned off while driving
There is some problem here, I believe. Unless something has drastically been made different nowadays, the vehicle has no clue about battery connection quality, once the engine is running, IF the alternator is functioning. The battery's purpose is ONLY to start the engine; once that has been...- imp

fixed my flaring 4r44e transmission!

1996 Explorer-Auto Trans trouble
Was the trans. completely disassembled? What-all was in the "rebuild kit"? It sounds as though, and this is only my wild-assed guess, that if it was disassembled, some locating part, possibly a snap-ring, has broken, worked loose, or was not seated fully, allowing lateral shift of parts, which...- imp

Anybody Know Yet.........
Let's say you can buy (still) an '11 Expl. with 2WD, will it be driven by the front wheels? Will they then delete (of course) the rear drive axle, substituting some kind of funky independent set-up? If so, the itty-bitty front differential used previously years in 4X4s will be inadequate to...- imp

engine miss/hestiation when driving
No miss at idle, or any time other than when engine is working a bit? This suggests that as the engine moves it's slight amount, while pulling, or vibration, the movement is possibly causing a plug wire to wiggle and get close to a hot place, or grounded place, causing a momentary loss of spark...- imp

transmission/linkage probs??

Causes of "Check engine Light" NO FAULTS
First, is the scanning device reliable? Known to work with the '98 protocol? If yes, my guess would be the PCM (computer) is at fault. The consequence of ignoring the MIL would be lack of assurance that some fault HAS shown up in future use. imp- imp

15W40 Engine Oil for a 04 Explorer..
And I was always under the impression that, since we are discussing "multi-viscosity" oils only here, that they do not really represent "thinner" or "thicker" oils, but rather have a more constant viscosity with regard to temperature. So, 5W-30 would not really be "thinner" than 10W-40, but...- imp
