2002 mountaineer
I have a 2002 v8 awd mountaineer, when cold it will go 50 yds in drive before trans loses all desire to move and rpms just climb. I bought another 02 for parts (mainly the trans), it was supposed to be awd but its 2wd. So the big question is can I use the 2wd tranny in my awd?

Thanks for a quick and straightforward answer, not what I wanted to hear though. I am obviously not a transmission expert so are the differences great, can I swap tail pieces or any other options other than making mine 2wd?

i think only difference is the tail shaft.

the only thing really big on that 2002 is ford has 2 builds an early build 2002 and a late build 2002 which actually have different gear ratios.

as for the tail shaft, i dont see why you cant swap it over ....

if it's anything like previous models the output shafts are different lenghts from the trans so you'd have to swap them out. and buy the time you do that you be bette off just getting a 4wd/awd trans

What are the production dates for the two different 02 trans?

i dont remember the cut off dates, i think its mid q2 of 2002 that split them 2nd and 4th gear ratios are different and also i think most of the wire harness/electronics differ. like 4x4 module etc.

IMO, to answer original question, Why not? Take out front driveshaft, trans. & transfer case, install new trans, you will likely need a longer driveshaft, would be my guess. imp

I have the longer drive shaft if I go that way. I was reading on a different thread that said starting in 02 they used the same trans on awd and 2wd, if that is right then problem solved. Can anyone confirm for me?

Cannot confirm, but if you can lay hands on an 02 Ford Shop Manual, it will tell you the answer to that question. If only one trans. is shown used in 02, that should settle it. My '04 Manual shows ONLY 5R55-S in use, for example.

A nice Ford Dealer Service Manager just might let you consult his Shop Manual. They usually have tons of them around. imp

This is a list from www.car-part.com for the transmissions installed in 2002 model year mountaineer.

A.T., 6 cyl (4.0L), thru 3/3/02 (5R55W), 4x2
A.T., 6 cyl (4.0L), thru 3/3/02 (5R55W), 4x4
A.T., 8 cyl (4.6L), thru 3/3/02 (5R55W), 4x2
A.T., 8 cyl (4.6L), thru 3/3/02 (5R55W), 4x4
A.T., 6 cyl (4.0L), from 3/4/02 (5R55S), 4x2
A.T., 6 cyl (4.0L), from 3/4/02 (5R55S), 4x4
A.T., 8 cyl (4.6L), from 3/4/02 (5R55S), 4x2
A.T., 8 cyl (4.6L), from 3/4/02 (5R55S), 4x4

Measure your tailshafts and look at the flanges. If the tailshafts are the same length, you might be able to just swap that over if the flanges are different (im betting they are).
Justawajz said he thinks that they are different lengths. Just need to confirm that.
The cutoff date is clear in the listing above.

Thanks guys, both of mine are early 02 dates so I'll check tailshafts and post back my findings.
