    Coil pack wiring... thingy?

Awright, you asked for it! Ha! Electricity and magnetism go hand in hand. Flowing electricity develops a magnetic field just like a permanent magnet has. The electric current flowing through motor windings creates a magnetic field. Oppositely, a changing magnetic field develops or induces a...

    Valve stem seals? 98 5.0

You can try putting in a heavier weight motor oil, if you can find single weight anymore. I'd try 40-weight. Hell, we used to put 90-weight gear oil in them in a pinch! If you go heavier, and find lower oil consumption, count on bad rings.

Finding replacement fuel pressure relief valve?

Well, ya don't want 60psi gasoline pressure leaking out under your hood! Worst comes to worst, see if a METAL tire valve stem cap fits those threads, and "glue" it on with good RTV Silicone rubber. Easily removable, should last pretty long. Check for leaks!

    Valve stem seals? 98 5.0

What you are seeing is CARBON build-up from excess oil consumption. How many miles to accumulate so much after you clean the? ALL the plugs? Valve stem seals only leak, mainly on intake valves. The exhaust valves are not exposed to the vacuum, sucking oil down the valves stems and burning it...

'98 EB Alternator Probs & Replacement

Here are a few 'scope pictures of alternator output voltage for several operating conditions: The variation is termed "ripple". These voltage waveforms are what the battery "sees". Note that if the battery is fully charged, it will have minimal effect on the ripple, which is inherent in load...

Finding replacement fuel pressure relief valve?

They LOOK identical to tire valves, but ARE NOT! Must resist gasoline. Have you tried Ford Parts? Early on in EFI, they had replacement parts for the systems, connectors, and such, and may have had the fuel Schraders. Don't think V-8 Schrader would be any different. Worst came to worst, get a...

    Coil pack wiring... thingy?

Radio Frequency Interference filter, nothing more than a capacitor. Used to look like this: But only one wire?? How can a complete circuit be made?? A capacitor consists of an INSULATOR surrounded by two electrical conductors. See metal case screw hole? It screws down onto a grounded surface...

    Ideal Compression SOHC

Very interesting thought. After shutdown, pressure in fuel rail and fuel line will "spurt" out a few ccs of fuel, then pretty much stop. Given combustion chamber volume of 40-50 cc, I don't imagine filling of the cylinder to cause lockup. Do not most EFI applications position the injector above...

'98 EB Alternator Probs & Replacement

Ok, OK! But simplifying technical concepts has often led to more confusion, at least for me. I've always felt the user of electrical components (Mechanic of vehicles) often lacks basic understanding of: necessity of a complete circuit, voltage as a FORCE causing electric current to flow, heating...

    Ideal Compression SOHC

A "stuck" injector would load it's cylinder with lots of fuel, but nowhere near enough to cause hydrostatic lock, because the fuel evaporates very quickly in a hot cylinder. A leaking head gasket can cause a cylinder to fill with coolant, then cranking the engine can lock-up the crankshaft and...

'98 EB Alternator Probs & Replacement

I never expected this degree of misunderstanding and misquoting over something as simple as two batteries connected together, which is exactly what the alternator-battery combination is. The only difference is that the alternator is capable of providing a range of voltages, while a battery is...

    4WH Theory & What Will Break 1st

Manual locking hubs do indeed "detach" the front wheels from the driving axles, no matter their type. Used for zillions of years successfully, but inconvenient for the Sunday drivers, so a variety of means of connecting/disconnecting, allowing slippage, etc., have been employed. Just as two...

'98 EB Alternator Probs & Replacement

Only rebuilding possible is replacement of bearings, brushes and diode bank. Voltage regulator not usually reworkable, but may be in some models. Generally, most common cause of failure is front bearing or brushes. Bad bearings make noise, squeal like hell, worn brushes can cause reduced output...

    Another Flexplate Problem

An important check, difficult but useful, might reveal the problem. The run-out present on the crankshaft end to which the flexplate fastens is critical; runout being measured on the Face of the runoutcrankshaft flange. Ford Shop Manuals call out a maximum allowable runout. I do not remember the...

'98 EB Alternator Probs & Replacement

Specific to the year, I cannot tell you much. However, the alternator in any vehicle is "told" to charge by the state of charge of the battery as well as the electrical load imposed while running. IOW, the battery has ONLY ONE main purpose: to start the engine. (Yes, in today's vehicles, it also...

    Rear diff model?

If I recall correctly, they are 12mm 12-point bolts. Only a 3/8-inch drive socket will fit in there, a 1/2-inch will not clear the u-joints. Socket used MUST be 12-point. I had to use an impact to loosen them, very rusty, plus I believe Ford used a form of Loctite on the threads.

    Rear diff model?

    Rear differential input shaft bearing

As @donalds points out, it does, as do most automotive differentials. One exception is the Ford 9-inch, which has THREE pinion bearings, two straddling the gear, giving added support. Here is a 9-inch pinion assembly showing the two tapered roller bearings, and the third straight roller...

    Rear differential input shaft bearing

    Rear differential input shaft bearing

Confusing description, "rear differential input shaft bearing": input shaft implies PINION SHAFT, thus pinion bearing; the whole ball of wax is the "rear differential". 2018 XLT review after 42,280 miles

My Ex is a 2004, purchased used in 2010. Had my share of problems, though nothing major: ABS Module died, TCC Solenoid failed, and Throttle Body failed (drive by wire). 170,000 miles, original shock absorbers, original fuel pump. Outstanding record, there. I will not buy a newer Explorer.

    PATS

You started with an Explorer 2000 302 engine, do I understand correctly? Ford used several PATS schemes, the first being really stupid: If incorrect key inserted, PATS disabled the fuel injectors as I understand it, but still allowed the engine to crank. This meant the driver could suspect some...

Some claim PATS can be "programmed out" of the PCM. I have reservations, though. Pinion bearings: FRONT, closest to driveshaft, REAR, farthest from driveshaft. Shims are used at the REAR location, between the bearing and the gear itself to locate the pinion properly for correct mesh with the ring gear. Shims are also used, usually a thick "crush washer" between the two...
