Ethanol Damage
My van gets better mileage on E85. If there is a semi truck wrecking yard near you, the older trucks had mechanical gauges. I spent $5 for a gauge and used an ice maker kit from home depot to hook it up.- Josh P

2004 4.0 XLS vin k miles per gallon question
A few tanks of E85 will help clean the fuel system and the engine. I have done this with my van. The 4.0 in my aerostar gets 14-17 mpg around town.- Josh P

Post your WTB Aerostar parts here.
I will write one up. I didn't think there was that much interest. If I did another T5 I'd use one from a V8 with the shifter attached.- Josh P

Transmission won't catch in reverse.
A brand spanking new unit never installed in a vehicle is $850 per an ad on craigslist listed in phoenix. I know this doesn't help troubleshoot your problem, but if you have a high mileage unit in your van it is worth considering- Josh P

Transmission won't catch in reverse.
The reverse band has 2 tabs on it that actuate the band. If one had snapped off and dropped down into the pan you would lose the gear. Did the engine light come on at the same time this happened?- Josh P

Just got a '94 Explorer
Manual swap is pretty easy to do. Some people have OK luck with the A4LD, I have not had such good luck with them. Last one that failed on me was 38 miles from home. I held the Rev limiter to limp home. I swapped in a 5 speed for less than the repair cost of the auto. With the auto I'd get 20-21...- Josh P

Just got a '94 Explorer
$750 for a standalone controller plus the cost of a 5r55e, you could swap in a 5 speed auto. The only thing I like about the A4LD is getting the vehicle cheap when someone else doesn't want to fix it.- Josh P

1989 Aerostar. Master cylinder ports.
The one on my 91 is different than the one on an 89 but every ford I own has the rear brake port on the front, away from the booster and firewall. The guy across the street from me sells studebaker nos parts. I love his avanti.- Josh P

Solved 1995 Aerostar with a 4.0L engine. I have oil pressure at idle but not when driving.
My bad, I should have paid closer attention to the year of your van. My 91 doesn't have that sensor. It is just a plug with the pump shaft on it. removal is the same as a distributor, 13mm bolt holds a washer over one side. It will twist as you pull it out. If you can please post pictures of it...- Josh P

Solved 1995 Aerostar with a 4.0L engine. I have oil pressure at idle but not when driving.
Pull the doghouse cover. Right above the top bell housing bolt toward the right side you will see a bolt holding a plate that is half round on one side.- Josh P

Solved 1995 Aerostar with a 4.0L engine. I have oil pressure at idle but not when driving.
You would have to pull the oil drive gear to inspect it. How long have you owned this van? what mileage interval on oil changes? How does the oil look, coolant or gas mixed with the oil will kill the pressure.- Josh P

Solved 1995 Aerostar with a 4.0L engine. I have oil pressure at idle but not when driving.
With the factory gauge it only takes a few lbs of oil psi to read in the normal range, so the best thing to do is get a mechanical gauge hooked up to the engine to see how much pressure you really have. If the van never had lifter tick before this happened I would suspect the oil pump or the oil...- Josh P

Solved Intake question for a 1988 Aerostar.
My air filter box was cracked so I replaced it with a round filter that goes on the end of the intake tube. It didn't do anything for power but I gained 1 mpg.- Josh P

Aerostar with crushed rocker panels from incorrectly putting it on a lift.
Treat the metal so it doesn't rust and call it good. Roll/spray on Bed liner works great on the underside of a car, and it takes a lot of abuse. Diy kits are reasonable at the auto parts stores.- Josh P

Solved Bad water pump and/or fan clutch.
Very good point don. The 4.0 has a reverse rotation fan, I think the 3.0 is standard rotation so even if it fits it still needs to be correct rotation.- Josh P

Outer tie rod replacement.
Don, you are correct. Those bushings are critical. Mine are so badly worn I can push on the side of the van till the tire stops it. I'm going to torch the rubber out and fill it with liquid polyurethane. The import guys have been making motor mounts this way for decades. If it doesn't work I...- Josh P

Wind noise from the passenger's side door.
I agree with brooklyn bay, most likely the gasket is worn and compressed enough that the air noise is coming from between the door and body. Is the door slightly bent? Is the plastic sleeve on the latch post in good shape? if not the door won't be tight.- Josh P

Do factory alloy wheels from a Ranger or an Explorer fit on an Aerostar?
Jeep cherokee base model had steel wheels in 15 inch that fit the van perfectly. I know a 225 wide tire will fit too.- Josh P

How are the rest of the bushings? Most of the ones on my van look brand new. Only ones I need to address are on the rear upper control arm. I'm going to make replacements out of polyurethane.- Josh P
