Run some SeaFoam through the tank to clean out any carbon build up. Any build up can create 'hot' spots that will cause pre-ignition or spark knock. It sounds like you have a bad case of pre-ignition. My 2000 will do the same thing if I don't have the correct fuel to match the tune I'm running.

If it's the uppers, just change them, they're inexpensive. The lowers aren't too bad to have the bushings pressed out and the new ones pressed in. And since you posted in the 2nd Gen area, you won't have any questions as to whether the T-bars fit correctly. On a 3rd Gen that's not an issue.
