Any survivors able to comment?
I rolled my 01 Mountaineer 8 1/2 times back in 2003. The 2 of us in the vehicle walked away with a few bruises while the Mountaineer was a complete write off. My passenger was belted in, I wasn't. So yes, I survived.- MAS Tequila

Motor won't turn over
Where are you at, and what weight oil are you running? Some of the 20w50 and similar oils don't like the cold. Pull your spark plugs and try spinning it over without compression. Maybe the starter has gotten weak and gave up the ghost, or the battery isn't really taking a full charge no...- MAS Tequila

There is a 2 wheel drive 5.0 L.
AWD Explorers were mainly sold in the north while 2wd were sold in the warmer climates is the way I always figured. In the past I sold a couple 2wd's up here in MI and people have said they didn't even know they made them cause all they ever seen was awd. I bought a 2000 5.0l Miami k9 police...- MAS Tequila

Should I FLUSH OUT my A/C system w/ new compressor install?
My clutch was bad and the compressor was likely original. The only thing I didn’t replace was the evaporator. My system was leaking down fairly quickly, so I replaced the majority of it. I probably would have replaced the evaporator if it didn’t require all of the disassembly. My...- MAS Tequila

Should I FLUSH OUT my A/C system w/ new compressor install?
Unless the current charge comes out black there is no reason to flush the system. When you evacuate or vacuum the system it will draw out any remnants of the previous charge. Pour the oil out of the new compressor before installing so you can measure what is going in and have the correct...- MAS Tequila

There is a 2 wheel drive 5.0 L.
I had a 2001 5.0 2WD Mountaineer back in 2001. That was when I lived in Charlotte where it snowed now and then. Now that I'm in south Florida, where it doesn't snow, I have a 2000 5.0 AWD Mountie that I swapped a 4406 into. Go figure the irony.- MAS Tequila

Question about sct tuners?
Let me start by saying that my 5.0 is completely STOCK except for the removal of the rear two cats. All FoMoCo except the coils are MSD, hey I like the red. Question about sct tuners?
It will work on your Ex out of the box. My x4 asks to confirm certain parameters it pulls after being connected and 'married' to the vehicle. It has the capability to be used on a wide range of different vehicles. What year is your Ex 98 or 99? Your post says 98 and your profile box says 99.- MAS Tequila

Only getting air from rear vents?
No vacuum to the door motor, if the blower motor is running. Check the blower motor, if it's running, is air coming out of the defrost vents? If the vacuum source is bad, the default is the defrost vents. If this is the case I can walk you through the steps I used to correct it on my 00.- MAS Tequila

Keep maintaining it. Not only are you going to get a great education, you'll have a relatively inexpensive vehicle. How rare are 3.55 gears with a 5.0?
Exactly, and he is only talking about 140 rpm at 65 mph. My dilemma is that with 33’s and an original ratio of 3.73, I need something like 4.30 to get back to factory. So do I go 4.10 or 4.56?- MAS Tequila

How rare are 3.55 gears with a 5.0?
My question is why? At 65 mph you will be dropping a whopping 140 rpm. How much fuel are you going to save? You will gain the same drop in ratio by going from the stock 28" tire to a 30" tire. If you EVER tow you will not be happy, trust me on this one. I have to re-gear soon, I'm running a...- MAS Tequila

Valve rattling under load in 99 explorer 5.0ltr.
Run some SeaFoam through the tank to clean out any carbon build up. Any build up can create 'hot' spots that will cause pre-ignition or spark knock. It sounds like you have a bad case of pre-ignition. My 2000 will do the same thing if I don't have the correct fuel to match the tune I'm running.- MAS Tequila

Control arm bushings
If it's the uppers, just change them, they're inexpensive. The lowers aren't too bad to have the bushings pressed out and the new ones pressed in. And since you posted in the 2nd Gen area, you won't have any questions as to whether the T-bars fit correctly. On a 3rd Gen that's not an issue.- MAS Tequila
