    97 2-Door and a Thule Rack, Take 2

Bought a Thule roof rack system as separate parts (used, eBay) for a 97 Explorer 2-door with no stock rack: 400xt towers, 50" load bars, 136 Fit kit (Explorer-specific rubber feet for the towers and hooks for the roof), 477 short roof adapter kit. Managed to get the load bars, towers and...

Text on the label, as related to the large white connector (sorry, the text for #17 is damaged, can't read last word): 1 org/blk - parking light polarity 2 org - parking light output 3 red/blk - dome light polarity 4 blk - dome light output 5 blk/white - trunk polarity 6 brown - disarm button 7...

    1997 Explorer with Dealer-Installed Alarm

I know this has been discussed to death, but I have yet to see pictures, so here goes with another of my long-winded posts. Links to pictures at end of post. While I realize that this is technically a guide on how to steal an alarm-enabled vehicle, the key would need to be present to disable...

1997 Explorer Sport 5 speed questions...

Hm... reminds me of a sorority girl joke, but I'd get instantly banned forever if posted... Having said that, I'm in raleigh with a 97 RWD 5-speed and 130k miles if you ever need something to compare...

Cant get the fuel filter off!! Help!?

There's actually a flange on each end of the filter, which is what the barbs inside the hose coupler is grabbing. You gotta get the tool completely inside the coupling so its touching the flange. Here's a pic from another thread showing the end of the filter and a plastic tool. Post #15 on...

Cant get the fuel filter off!! Help!?

Remove the inline fuel filter. I went thru this a few months ago when I changed out my fuel filter. Saw this thread, grabbed the tool box and a camera. BTW, the stuff that poured out of the filter looked like the bottom of a pot of coffee. I'm including pictures of everything, for people who...

OBD-2 Scans at a Retail Store... GONE???

So, the 97 Exp has been missing for a while and I finally got a day off to get the OBD scan done at the local parts store. Much to my surprise, the guy at the counter tells me that they've been recently (within the past 2 weeks) forbidden by law to do OBD scans and that this ONLY applies to...

    Locked in and out.

Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm just brainstorming here, cuz I don't have a diagram or picture to go by: The actual lock knob that sticks up from the window sill should just be an extension rod connected directly to the lock. It obviously works both as an indicator and as a way to lock the...

    Locked in and out.

I haven't had the door panels off either of mine X's, but in general, it sounds like the inside handle and power lock mechanisms are physically detached from the lock cylinder and door latch. Either that or the lock cylinder and door latch mechanisms are both damaged. Does the lock knob move...

Announce your New "Elite" Status here...

Done. Wish I'd found this site when I had the '94. I probably would've kept it instead of selling it in fear of a catastrophic failure. Lets see what I could've bought instead of the Elite Explorer membership: 1/2 a tank of gas 5 pints of Guinness 1 entree at the local sushi restaurant 5...

    My '96 Explorer I paid $250 For.

Gee, and I thought I'd gotten a deal on a 97 XL base model (it was free). Now I'm envious. On the other hand, mine has half the mileage. Congrats!

XLT Cloth To Eddie Bauer Leather Questions

Other than the electrical connections, are the seats (Frame, padding, covers) the same? If so, then have you considered just replacing the cover only? I did something similar on my '97: unbolted and removed both front seats, removed both covers (back and base), swapped driver and...

My thoughts on a reason to stay away from FRAM oil filters...

This comparison is for motorcycles... where the filter is even more important, cuz the engine and transmission use the same oil. Probably not quite the same components as a car filter, but its a start... http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html and this one, found the link on a dodge...

97 with clutch, pilot bearing or slave cylinder issues

oh, it gets better... last nite, parked on slight hill, I ran into my office for about 30 minutes only to come out and find it had rolled back about 1.5 car lengths... so it won't disengage after driving 3+ hrs... and now it's not engaging properly at a stop. Guess I'm not going hunting this...

97 with clutch, pilot bearing or slave cylinder issues

Thanks for the opinions... unfortunately, they just reaffirm what I already thought. Guess that tranny's coming off this weekend. Hopefully the local parts store idiots or Ford dealerships will have a slave cylinder on hand, just in case. Just to clarify, for anyone reading this late, hard...

97 with clutch, pilot bearing or slave cylinder issues

Apologies in advance if this ends up long and rambling... So, I just picked up a 97 Exp. 2-door with a 4.0 OHV, 5-spd manual (M5OD-R1??), brand new Uniroyal TirePaws and 91k miles on it. Free, I might add. Was originally a southern California car. I'm the 4th owner. The clutch and slave...
