What to do with broken 1997 Mountaineer?

Unfortunately, my Mountaineer's transmission went out on a trip out of town last weekend. Car is currently at a garage 150 miles from home (too far, and beyond my ability to part out myself) Estimated repair of transmission is ~$3000, so I am looking to unload car. What is my best option...

Transfer case repair? 97 Mounty AWD

Thanks for the reference. I found a used one on that site for under $500. They are checking the milage on it. It comes with a 101 day warranty. Is it advisable to buy a used one? My Mountaineer has 160,000 on it. If I get it to 180,000 w/o any other big problems I'll be happy so I figure...

Transfer case repair? 97 Mounty AWD

Can you refer me to directions on how to replace it yourself? I am a novice at car repair (I considered a great accomplishment to remove and replace the front drive shaft in my efforts to diagnose the issue), but my father-in-law is pretty handy and will be visiting in the next month or so...

Transfer case repair? 97 Mounty AWD

Thanks for the info and the warning. I have read over the info on removing the drive shaft and the parking drift/roll issues (I forgot to mention it in my post above). I always place the e-brake on (generally did it even before removing d-shaft) and, if on an incline, chock the wheels.

Transfer case repair? 97 Mounty AWD

I had the clunk noise evaluated by a shop today after replacing the front drive shaft did not remove the noise. (history in link below) The shop quoted me a price of $2600 to repair the transfer case with a new case and 3-year warranty. Is this a typical price? It is probably beyond my...

    Transfer case clunk?

I have a clunk when I accelerate and when I stop with the front drive shaft installed. I replaced the front drive shaft with a new shaft but it still clunks. Driving without the front drive shaft installed removes the clunk. The confounding thing is the boot on the front drive shaft looks...

    Clunk when accelerate - driveshaft?

Link to photo Photo of old drive shaft and damage below. This is damaged, right? But it apparantly was not the cause of the clunk because it still clunked with a new drive shaft. Is the driveshaft definitely broken and need replacement if it doesn't have the rubber boot...

    Clunk when accelerate - driveshaft?

Not the driveshaft...what now? So I replaced the front drive shaft with a new shaft. I test drove it 10 feet and still had clunk on acceleration and now on stopping. There is occasionally a clunk when making a hard turn but it does not happen every time unlike the other clunks. I had...

    Clunk when accelerate - driveshaft?

Update: Clunk when accelerate - Not the driveshaft I'm not very mechanically inclined but this forum has been very helpful. I have a clunk when I accelerate my 1997 5.0L Mountaineer that has gotten progressively worse. Based on the post below, I think it's the front drive shaft (hope...

Front Drive Shaft - Where to find for 1997?

I am having trouble finding a replacement front drive shaft for my 1997 Mountaineer. I have searched the forum but can't find new information and am new to car maintainence and want to make sure I have right part. I measured the driveshaft (hopefully correctly) and it appears to be the 27"...
